Day in History
In 1944, President
Franklin D. Roosevelt is elected to an unprecedented fourth term. He remains
the only president to have served more than two terms. FDR presided over
two of the biggest crises in U.S. history: the Great Depression (1930s) and WW
II. By the time of his fourth term, his health had decline and died of a stroke
7 months before the war ended. Congress proposed a law that would limit
presidents to two consecutive terms.
