Day in History
October 28th, 1886, the Statue of Liberty, a gift of friendship from the people
of France to the people of the United States, is dedicated in New York Harbor
by President Grover Cleveland. Originally known as “Liberty Enlightening the
World,” the statue was proposed by the French historian Edouard de Laboulaye to
commemorate the Franco-American alliance during the American Revolution.
