Elephants and Salem

What do elephants have to do with Salem, you may ask? Well, there is a great story about the first elephant to come to the United States, and the story is set here in Salem. Here is a link to that story from Destination Salem's blog: Elephant on Board  You should definitely read this historical tidbit.

Now some 218 years later another elephant has arrived in downtown Salem, here at the Hawthorne Hotel.

Nelson Dionne, (L) with Andy Seidel (R)
Yesterday local historian Nelson Dionne arrived in my office with yet another offering for the Hawthorne Hotel -- this time instead of a postcard or other bit of ephemera, it was a teak carving of an elephant.  We gratefully accepted this gift, and have installed said elephant in place where s/he can gaze out of a window all day long.

This time instead of on board a ship, the elephant came in an SUV

I hope you enjoy learning what goes on when one runs a historic hotel in the midst of a generous and history-preserving citizenry.  And of course, I hope to see you here.

Special thanks to Nelson, Bonnie Hurd Smith, and Kate Fox for sharing.
