What’s Happening in Salem this week
Guided Ranger Tours of Custom House & Friendship
Sunday February 16th-Saturday February 22nd (Not available Tuesday February 18th) Tours are at 1pm and 2:30pm daily.
During School Vacation, The Salem Maritime National Historic Site is offering free, ranger-led tours of the historic, replica tallship "Friendship" and the U.S. Custom House, which collected millions of dollars in taxes from Salem's maritime trade, also was the workplace of famous author Nathaniel Hawthorne. Sign up for tour at Salem Visitors Center (2 New Liberty Street). Tour meets at the "Friendship" on Derby Wharf.

The technology that made the modern music business possible came into existence in the New Jersey laboratory where Thomas Alva Edison created the first device to both record sound and play it back. He was awarded U.S. Patent No. 200,521 for his invention--the phonograph—on February 18, 1878.
