Top Five Things to Do in Salem in the Winter

Salem is a year-round visitor destination, with a very heavy emphasis on visitation in the summer and fall, especially the month of October.  I really wish that all the people who want to come in October, who try to come in October, and who do come in October would try us out in the winter.  There are still great things to do here, and you can do all those things without having to wait in line at so many places, and jostle with crowds on the streets.  Believe me!

So, here is my list of the top five things that you should plan to do when you come to visit in the Winter:

1.  Go to the Peabody Essex Museum.  This is an amazing place.  I could make a top 10 list just out of all the reasons you will love PEM.  They have the ONLY Chinese house outside of China.  That should be reason enough, all by itself, to come, but they have so much more.  If you want to read all about it, go to their website.  You can find out everything you want to know.  www.pem.org

2.  Visit the Salem Witch Museum.  While you are in Salem, you need to find out why Salem is famous as "The Witch City" and this is the place to start that exploration.  They tell the story of the famed "Witch Trials" very well, and also will inform you about the history of the "modern" witch.  Here is a link to their website: http://www.salemwitchmuseum.com/ for more information.

3.  The House of the Seven Gables is open year-round, save the period of January 1 -10.  It is located just a few minutes walk or drive from the Hawthorne Hotel, and learning more about Nathaniel Hawthorne is a natural for any visit to Salem, especially one that begins with a stay at the historic Hawthorne Hotel.  Here is a link to their website:  http://www.7gables.org .

4.  Go to one of our famous psychics here in Salem and see what the future holds for you.  This is a great way to kick off a new year, right?  Here are some that we recommend:  Crow Haven Corner, Enchanted, Magika, and Pyramid Books.

5.  Go to a movie at CinemaSalem.  They have both first-run movies, as well as locally-made movies that are specific to Salem and the North Shore.  It is only one block away, and they have awesome popcorn and a wide variety of beverages and snacks, in addition to the traditional movie candy.  Here is a link to their website so you can see what is playing:  http://cinemasalem.com/ .

BONUS information:  Question - Why are March 6 - 13 such special dates?  Answer - Because those are the dates of the 2014 Salem Film Fest, which is an absolutely amazing event if you, like me, enjoy well-made documentary films.  Here is the link to that information:  http://salemfilmfest.com/2013/?p=5643

Remember, we are offering a "Winter Warmth" package here at the Hawthorne Hotel to encourage you to come in the winter, so please be sure to ask about it when you call to book your room.  978-744-4080.

I hope to see you here.
