A Lovely Winter Wedding

On Friday night I snapped these photos with my iPhone to share with you here.
The Ballroom set for the ceremony and shot as a panorama makes the room look L-shaped which it clearly is not, but I liked the photo anyway.    Click on the photo to enlarge it for better viewing.

Liz Dube, Banquet Manager, is a calming and guiding influence to our wedding couples and their attendants

I loved this bride's dress and veil.

The table settings were very simple, but looked elegant without a lot of expense.  The bouquets of baby's breath added a wintery look, floating above flameless candles in glass cylinders.

The lights on the trees in the Common across the street from the Hawthorne Hotel add a wonderful touch to a winter wedding.
I hope you enjoy these snapshots of a winter wedding in the Grand Ballroom of the historic Hawthorne Hotel.

November Part-time Employee of the Month

Yesterday we presented our November Part-time Employee of the Month Award to Sylvester Toribio.  If you have been reading this blog for the past almost eight years that I have been writing it, you will already recognize his name.

Sylvester has been with us since early 1986, making him one of the longest-tenured employees here.  He has won this award numerous times because he is such a stalwart member of our team.  For most of his time here he worked full-time, but recently he semi-retired, and still works for us part-time.

Sylvester is not only a hard worker, but he is a gentleman as well, exemplifying what one of the chefs called "kitchen chivalry" in the most positive of ways.  Add to that the fact that he is so well-liked by all the members of the Hawthorne Hotel TEAM, and you have someone we just cannot let go into full retirement.

I hope you enjoy learning more about the members of our staff who make things happen behind the scenes.  Sylvester is one such person, who keeps the kitchen prep going and going -- rather like the Energizer bunny!

Left to right:  Banquet Manager Liz Dube, General Manager Juli Lederhaus, Sylvester Toribio and Executive Chef Steve Nelson

While it may not look like Sylvester is particularly happy in these photos, we all know he really was, and that he is, as my father used to say, "smiling on the inside" for this recognition.

I hope to see you here, enjoying some of the food that Sylvester helped to prepare.

More Great Flicks for this Holiday Week

Here is the news for the week from CinemaSalem.  Since this awesome movie theater is located just one block from the Hawthorne Hotel, it makes the TAVERN at the Hawthorne the perfect place to go either before or after the movies for a nice meal or adult beverage.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We found Les Miserables to be shatteringly beautiful and deeply inspiring. I personally was a Les Mis neophyte, having never seen the musical in any of its 6000 forms, nor read the book back in French class, and I confess I was expecting a "show", based on some of the reviews. Instead, we get a deeply moving documentary of injustice and inequity, made all the more affecting by being sung. Anne Hathaway is simply unforgettable.
I also caught The Hobbit: An Unexpected Adventure and loved it, especially its message about the power of kindness, friendship, and loyalty -- mundane, everyday values -- when life confronts us with great challenges. As with all the Peter Jackson/JRR Tolkien film adaptations, it made me yearn to tour New Zealand!
I hope your week is also relaxing and stimulating, and you get a chance to connect with friends and family.
Here's this coming week's CinemaSalem showtime lineup!
Now Playing: A Royal Affair (R): Lis Miserables (PG13); Jack Reacher (PG13); The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 3D PG13); The Spirit of Salem 3D (NR); This Perfect Place: A Natural History of the Massachusetts North Shore (NR); and The True 1692 3D!
Opening in the Screening Room this Friday is A Royal Affair, the true story of an ordinary man who wins a queen's heart and starts a revolution. Based on the intriguing love triangle between the insane Danish King Christian VII, his royal physician, a man of enlightenment and idealism, and the young but strong Queen Caroline Mathilda, A Royal Affair is the gripping tale of brave idealists who risk everything in their pursuit of freedom for their people. 89% of the world's critics love it. Washington Post: "Even appreciated simply as a little-known chapter of European history, it proves consistently engrossing, edifying and affecting." Philadelphia Inquirer: "A Royal Affair is historical drama of the highest order - teeming with big ideas, and anchored by the nicely nuanced performances of Vikander and Mikkelsen." LA Times: "This highly polished costume drama is exceptionally well-made and a model of intelligent restraint."
A Royal Affair will screen on Friday at (11:15 AM), (2:45), 7:20 and 9:50; Saturday at (11:15 AM), 7:20 and 9:50; Sunday and Monday at (11:15 AM), (2:45) and 7:20; Tuesday at (2:45) and 7:20; and Wednesday and Thursday at (4:10) and 7:30.
The aforementioned Les Mis will screen on Friday and Saturday at (12:00), (3:15), 6:50 and 10:00; Sunday and Monday at (12:00), (3:15) and 6:50; Tuesday at (3:15) and 6:50; and Wednesday and Thursday at (4:00) and 7:00.
Tom Cruise's fun and thrilling Jack Reacher will screen on Friday and Saturday at (11:00 AM), (1:40), (4:30), 7:15 and 10:00; Sunday and Monday at (11:00 AM), (1:40), (4:30) and 7:15; Tuesday at (1:40) and (4:30), 7:15; and Wednesday and Thursday at (4:30) and 7:15.
The Hobbit will screen on Friday and Saturday at (11:30 AM), (3:00), 6:30 and 9:40; Sunday and Monday at (11:30 AM), (3:00) and 6:30; Tuesday at (3:00) and 6:30; and Wednesday and Thursday at (3:30) and 6:45.
The True 1692, our popular 3D film which presents the actual events of the Salem Witch Ordeal, will screen on Friday-Tuesday at 2:00 and 6:30; and Wednesday-Thursday at 6:30.
Also screening is This Perfect Place: A Natural History of the Massachusetts North Shore, Friday-Monday at noon; and Tuesday-Thursday at 4:00.
Thanks for supporting CinemaSalem!
I'm going to guess that the insane fellow is on the right in this picture from A Royal Affair, Denmark's official nomination for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film.
The threesome from A Royal Affair
Need a REALLY Last-Minute Christmas Gift?
The Hawthorne Hotel is ready for you.  Here are a few of the items available, 24-hours each and every day.
Gift Cards -- One size fits all. Available in any denomination you choose.  Good for overnight accommodations, meals or beverages in the Tavern or Nathaniel's, even to help pay for a wedding reception.
 Christmas Ornament of the Hawthorne Hotel
Hawthorne Hotel "Teddy Bear" plus "Blankie" Squeaky Toy
We are divided about what to call this squeaky toy -- either a dog-witch, or a dog-Puritan -- but if your dog is anything like mine, they won't care.  Good for a tiny dog.
This next one is good for a larger dog.  A sweaky toy, too.
This next item is one of our awesome Halloween Tee-Shirts.  All in size XL.
Last but not least, a gift that will keep on giving all year long -- a Salem Rotary Club Calendar, that is both a terrific calendar of excellent scenes of Salem, but also a raffle ticket for a $100 raffle that is drawn every Tuesday at the Salem Rotary Club meeting, and best of all, you need not be present to win, and you can win more than once!
We sell the calendars as our contribution to the Salem Rotary Club, with 100% of the proceeds of the calendar sales going to scholarships for Salem high school seniors.  Only $20 each.
If you want one of these items, but can't make it here in person, you can call us at 978-744-4080 and we can help you over the phone. All items except the calendar can be purchased over the phone with a credit card.
I hope this is helpful to you on a day when you might need that "emergency" gift, or just because you want one of these cool items.
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at the Hawthorne Hotel
There are creatures stirring here at the historic Hawthorne Hotel -- our welcomed guests!
 It seems that every person who enters the hotel these days is exclaiming about how festive the hotel looks, and we are so happy to hear that, but we know you cannot all come at this time of the year, so I thought I would post some photos so you could enjoy it here too.
One of the most popular places to take photos in the Hawthorne Hotel this time of the year, our lobby poinsettia tree takes 117 living plants, maintained daily, to be this showy for all of you.
Perhaps you can see one of our guests wrapping Christmas gifts in the shadow of our lobby poinsettia tree.  I love it when are guests are so comfortable here that they treat our lobby like their living room.  Makes me smile!
The fireplace in the Tavern is a very popular place right now.
The Tavern in panorama.
By the way, we have had a couple of cancellations for the early Grand Buffet seating at 10:30 a.m.  If you are looking for reservations for Christmas Day, please give a call to 978-825-4311 or 4360.   Please keep in mind this is only for that early seating.
Also, we do have a communal table for single diners that we set up for 1:30 pm.  If you wish to join us on Christmas Day, and want the company of others at your meal, here is an opportunity for you.  Just give us a call.
I hope to see you here, where I will be with my trusty NIKON, waiting to take your photos with our compliments.
Movies Just the Ticket During the Holiday Break
As you may already know we have an awesome independent movie theater here in Salem called CinemaSalem.  Here is the lineup from their newsletter for this week.
Dear Juli,
Now, as you may have heard, the big holiday week is just about here, so here's the big Christmas week's film lineup!
Now Playing: Lis Miserables (PG13); Jack Reacher (PG13); Meet the Fokkens (NR); The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 3D PG13); Rise of the Guardians 3D (PG); Skyfall (PG13); The Spirit of Salem 3D (NR); This Perfect Place: A Natural History of the Massachusetts North Shore (NR); and The True 1692 3D!
We're packing nine films into our four-screen cinema this week, and every day has a slightly different showtime schedule, so we'll showcase the critical raves for three of the films, and present the showtimes for the rest of them. Just take our word for it: they're awesome!
Opening on Christmas Day, next Tuesday, is Les Miserables, which, besides being a wonderful movie, wins some kind of award for sending us the biggest movie poster in history. It's by the Church Street door. And the critics? New York Magazine: "The film is going to be a monster hit and award winner." Variety: "The squalor and upheaval of early 19th-century France are conveyed with a vividness that would have made Victor Hugo proud, heightened by the raw, hungry intensity of the actors' live oncamera vocals." Urban Cinefile: "Tony-award winning musical delivers everything at its creative peak - drama, performance, filmmaking and the language of music that delivers its message like no other. An emotional tour de force."
Les Mis will screen on Christmas Day at (3:15) and 6:50; and Wednesday and Thursday next week at (12:00), (3:15) and 6:50.
Opening this Friday is the new Tom Cruise thriller, Jack Reacher. Rolling Stone: "This is Cruise's show. And he nails it. The patented smile is gone, replaced by a glower that makes Jack Reacher a dark and dazzling ride." Hollywood Reporter: "Tom Cruise is in fine form." NYC Movie Guru: "Heart-stopping, smart, taut and electrifying. It's one of the finest suspense thrillers in years."
Jack Reacher opens Friday at (4:30), 7:15 and 10:00; Saturday at (11:15 AM), (1:50), (4:30), 7:15 and 10:00; Sunday at (11:15 AM), (1:50), (4:30) and 7:15; Monday at 11:45 AM) and 2:30; Christmas Day at (4:00) and 7:15, and Wednesday and Thursday at (11:00 AM), (1:40), (4:30) and 7:15.
Meet the Fokkens does not star Ben Stiller! It's actually an amazing documentary we hoped to screen at last year's Salem Film Fest, but it got scooped up with a distribution deal, so we've had to wait until now to present it. Variety: "A racy, thoroughly enjoyable docu about a pair of 69-year-old identical-twin hookers in Amsterdam, Meet the Fokkens bounces along with defiant joie de vivre." Film Journal International: "The feminist documentary takes up the battered-wife syndrome, low pay for female workers, forced separation of mothers and children and-finally-a woman-owned business. Gloria Steinem must be happy, though the film centers on 69-year-old twin hookers." Toronto Globe and Mail: "The doc never falls, thanks to the sheer strength of its subjects' undaunted and indomitable character."
Meet the Fokkens wil screen Friday at (4:45), 7:30 and 9:15; Saturday at (12:15), (3:00), (4:45), 7:30 and 9:15; Sunday at (12:15), (3:00), (4:45) and 7:30; Monday at (12:15) and (3:00); Christmas Day at (3:00), (5:00) and 7:30; and Wednesday and Thursday at (12:15), (3:00), (5:00) and 7:30.
The marvelous The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey screens Friday at (3:15), 6:30 and 9:50; Saturday at (11:45 AM), (3:15), 6:30 and 9:50; Sunday at (11:45 AM), (3:15) and 6:30; Monday at (11:00 AM) and (2:10); Christmas Day at (3:00) and 6:30; and Wednesday and Thursday at (11:30 AM), (3:00) and 6:30.
Two of our films will play now through Christmas Eve. Skyfall will screen Friday at 6:45 and 10:00; Saturday at (3:40), 6:45 and 10:00; Sunday at (3:40) and 6:45; and Monday at (1:40 PM). Rise of the Guradians will screen on Friday at (4:30 PM) Saturday and Sunday at (11:30 AM) and (1:30); and Monday, Christmas Eve, at (11:30 AM).
Our own fascinating survey of Salem's best citizens, The Spirit of Salem, will screen Saturday-Monday, and Wednesday and Thursday at 11:00 am.
The True 1692, our popular 3D film which presents the actual events of the Salem Witch Ordeal, will screen on Friday at 6:30; Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 and 6:30; Monday at 2:00; Christmas Day at 6:30; and Wednesday and Thursday at 2:00 and 6:30.
And if you want your relatives to know what a great region we live in, bring them to This Perfect Place: A Natural History of the Massachusetts North Shore, which will screen on Friday at 4:00; Saturday-Monday at 12:00 noon; Christmas Day at 4:00; and Wednesday and Thursday at 12:00 noon.
That's a full schedule of great films! Thanks for supporting CinemaSalem, and have a warm and wonderful holiday!
A Poet in our Midst
R. Tirrell Leonard Jr. with his newly published book, In the Murmuring Trees
"A Cloud" is his own personal favorite in the book.
Serving up some books instead of banquet plates.
 If you have kept up with us via any social media you already know that Robert Leonard is one of "us" here at the Hawthorne Hotel.  He is a banquet server who was recognized earlier this year as the Employee of the Month.  He has a number of guests who request his service when they are having a function here because he is so attentive to the personal requests that people have.
It is always fun to know a little bit more about our team members and we thought you would enjoy that as well.
It turns out that Robert has a pen name, R. Tirrell Leonard, Jr. and he has self-published a book of poems that he penned.  The book, In the Murmuring Trees  is shown here, with the page turned to his favorite poem, "A Cloud".
I asked Robert what inspired him to begin to write poetry, and he quickly replied "Poe", followed by many other famous poets.
You can purchase autographed copies of Robert's book here at the Hawthorne Hotel, and we know that he would be thrilled if you did so!  They are $29.99 plus tax, and may also be ordered over the phone by calling 978-744-4080.
I hope to see you here.
We Connect with Our Guests
One of the things that we believe we do well here at the Hawthorne Hotel is connecting with our guests. Here is an example of that kind of "connection":
Left to right: Judy Hurley, Gordon MacDonald, Thomas MacDonald, Marjorie and Ray Frackelton.  Both couples are from Rhode Island.  (Marjorie was a MacDonald)
From Thomas MacDonald, our Director of Sales:
"I met Gordon MacDonald some years ago when I was with Bermuda Tourism and I participated in the AAA Travel Show held in Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, MA. He took a trip to Bermuda as a result of our chatting at AAA.
"Gordon met me again three years ago when I was at the AAA show for the hotel.  We talked about the hotel and I invited him to come for a visit. He did come to Salem and he has been here for several visits on the AAA Christmas in Salem package.  Each time he has brought another couple along."
This year when Mr. Gordon MacDonald returned to the hotel, he and Judy brought a small gift for Thomas, and we thought this would make a nice "photo op" and that you might enjoy seeing this.
One more fact that you should be aware of -- the AAA package is one of the very best values that we offer our guests here at the Hawthorne Hotel.  However, it is only available to members of the AAA Southern New England, through their AAA Travel Office.  So, if you want to obtain the very best possible package for your stay here at the Hawthorne Hotel, be sure you are a member of AAA Southern New England and call one of the AAA Southern New England offices to book.
Welcome Aboard Christine Perry
Claire Kallelis, Assistant General Manager, with Christine Perry
In mid-October Christine Perry joined our Sales and Catering Team as one of our Catering Sales Managers.  We are delighted to have her on board as she brings a wealth of experience with her to the Hawthorne Hotel.
When working with wedding clients, Christine can speak both from her years of professional experience, but also from the experience of having been the mother of the bride herself, so she knows how it feels from both sides.
If it is for a corporate event, Christine also has many years of experience, so you know your event will be properly booked and detailed, and everything will go according to plan.
When you are considering booking an event, and want to work with Christine you can contact her directly at 978-825-4364, or through the administrative assistant in the Catering Sales Office, Christine Madigan, at 978-825-4358.
I hope to see you here, as does Christine.
Teddy Bear Tea Photos
The Marines attend the event to collect the toys and deliver them to the depot where they are sorted and delivered to children according to their wishes to Santa.
This past weekend we did our Teddy Bear "Toys for Tots" signature event. I thought you might like to see some photos of this annual children's event that collects so many new, unwrapped toys for the less fortunate children of the Salem area.  The Hawthorne Hotel provides the tea buffet on a complimentary basis when children bring a new, unwrapped "Toy for Tots" to the event
.
We set the buffet table with all the tea goodies at the appropriate height for the little ones.
Lindsay Otis and her niece, Lily
The entertainers at this event are so good with the children.  Here they encourage the children to play the keyboard along with them.  As you can see, that is VERY popular!
Some of the comments we received after the event were:
"This is our fourth Teddy Bear Tea & it never disappoints.  I love the band and how interactive & accepting they are of the children.  Thank you, Hawthorne Hotel!" -- Lauren R
"This was our fifth year coming to this from R.I.  We were very pleased as usual!  Very attentive to my child's food allergy too.  :-)"  --Jen H
I hope you enjoy learning a little bit more about some of the events we do here as part of the community, and I hope to see you here.
