With the end of the Ansel Adams exhibit at the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) next weekend, they have decided to extend the exhibit hours during its final week.
Starting Tuesday October 2 to Friday October 5, PEM will be open 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm in addition to their regular hours of 10 am to 5 pm. They will be offering a reduced museum admission price of $10 (still free to both Salem residents and PEM members).
Ansel Adams: At the Water's Edge takes guests on a tour of water in its many forms from ice, snow, rain, mist, and clouds. It is a beautiful exhibit and I would highly recommend to anyone visiting or living in Salem. This is one not to be missed. It will be your last chance to see it before it moves on the the England National Maritime Museum.
I hope to see you there or here,
Juli

Annual Halloween Ball
"Solstice of Souls"
"Solstice of Souls"
Every year this ball is attended by approximately 1,000 costumed party-goers. Each year we have a different theme, and this year it is "Solstice of Souls".
Time ~ 8pm-midnight (Doors open at 7:30 pm)
Our Plan for Your "SOUL" for the Evening:
Food ~ Cocktail-style food all night long, featuring passed hors d'oeuvres and stationed cocktail food as well. Anything you can eat with your fingers, and maybe even some "finger sandwiches", minus the bloody stumps of course!
Photographs ~ Photo stations in two places. We will take your photo either individually or as a group, with multiple shots. Photos will be available and completely free of charge, on-line, by the Monday evening following the Ball. If you were here last year, and missed "us" doing this for you, never fear. We are back!
Entertainment ~ Live band, "Hush" will be playing dance music all night long in the Grand Ballroom. DJs will be performing in both Sophia's and the Library, with dance floors there as well, so virtually any kind of party music you can imagine will be available in those three areas.
Costumes ~ Everyone comes in costume, and there is a great costume contest which is the highlight of the Ball. Cash prizes given for First, Second and Third place in both the Group and Individual categories. Judges pass out wristbands to those costumes they have selected to participate in the contest.
Even if you don't get into the costume contest, the "people watching" is the best.
Wander ~ Cruise the different rooms where the party takes place. Three levels of Halloween decor for you to check out, along with a different "vibe" in every space.
Souvenir ~ Each guest receives a souvenir tee-shirt with the logo of this year's ball, and the date, as a parting gift when they leave. All size XL.
Drinks ~ Cash bars and beer buckets available all throughout the party. ATM on site.
Age ~ Must be 21 and older to attend
Price ~ $90 per person
"Solstice of Souls" Theme features Adventure, Mysticism, Fantasy and Mystery
Costume Ideas ~ We will set the stage and it is up to each of you to fill it and this year our concept is a blend of reality (people, places and time) and fantasy (the mythology and lore) and as such there are many directions to take and consider when planning your costume.
Things You Must Know -- No weapons, either real or fake, can come in to the Ball. No outside alcohol or any beverage containers allowed in to the Ball. Photo ID required at the door for admission.

ADDED October 8, 2012:
Some things just need to be even more comprehensive than others. When it comes to passing out information about the biggest, best Halloween Party in all of Halloween Central, #SalemMA, you just can't be too informative.
So, here is some more information about the Theme of this year's party, and I am adding this to the BIG post you see here:
SOLSTICE OF SOULS
Theme ~ Adventure, Mysticism, Fantasy and Mystery
Costume Ideas ~ We will set the stage and it is up to each of you to fill it and this year our concept is a blend of reality (people, places and time) and fantasy (the mythology and lore) and as such there are many directions to take and consider when planning your costume. If you plan to dress to the theme this year it is our hope to provide you with a little inspiration to get you going with a little push in two possible directions:
Reality--Relating to a specific time period such as Renaissance or Medieval England.
Visit these websites for more information:
Fantasy--Gods, Monsters, Legends and Lore of Ancient Cultures and Lost Civilizations.
Visit these websites for more information:
What not to bring ~ We do not allow any weapons or items that look like a weapon. If we find a weapon as part of your costume, we will confiscate it and return it to you at the end of the evening. Also, no alcohol may be brought into the hotel. Any alcohol found on you will be confiscated and disposed of, and to that end, no beverages or beverage containers may be brought in to the hotel.
More information ~
Please call us at 978-744-4080 with any questions.

As of the date of this blog post, we still have some availability for nights in October, especially for mid-week dates.

Most weekends are completely sold out, so availability for those will be limited to any cancellations that might take place.

In order to book that package, you need to fill out a special form and fax or email it in to us. Click on this link for the form: Reservations for October 29, 30, 31 Package Directions are on this form.

Hawthorne Hotel Reservations You will see the same availability for the hotel that our reservationists see on our website. Reservations for overnight accommodations in
October Next Year, 2013
Here is a link to the blog post I wrote in September about how to reserve a room for a weekend in October, 2013: Thinking ahead to 2013 It contains all of the information you need to know. The important thing to remember is that reservations for weekends in October require a one-night, NON-REFUNDABLE deposit. You need to understand that the deposit is not going to be refunded for any reason, so if that is an issue for you, you should not make a reservation, or you should buy traveler's insurance from a reputable agency, in case you are unable to make the trip.

Lodging Other Than at the Hawthorne Hotel
![]() |
| Emerson Inn-by-the-Sea, Rockport, MA |
Here is a list of other lodging establishments in the area. Our number-one recommendation for any property not located right here in Salem is The Emerson Inn-by-the-Sea in Rockport. Their phone number is 978-546-6321. The reasons for the recommendation are four-fold. 1) It is a lovely historic property right on the water. 2) They will take you to the commuter rail, and you can take the train right into downtown Salem so you don't have to fight the traffic, which can be mind-boggling. 3) They are nice people there, just like we are at the historic Hawthorne Hotel. 4) You won't have to find a place to park, because you can take the train here. Seriously, avoiding the traffic and the parking issues, especially on the weekends in October is a HUGE deal.
Rockport is approximately a 30-minute drive from Salem, and about an equally long train ride.

Employee Open House
Two weeks ago, we had an Employee Open House at the Hotel. We wanted a chance to touch base with employees on the changes that have been made in the past year. The managers also wanted to offer some quick tours of the newly renovated rooms for employees who may never go to the guests floors.
We decided to raffle a beautiful thirty-two inch flat screen at this event, just to keep things interesting. The event had a great turn out, but only one person could go home with the television and that lucky man was one of our banquet servers, Robert Leonard.
Congratulations Robert!

Free Museum Day
If you are thinking about visiting a museum, this Saturday is the day you should really do it. Why? Because it is a day when you will be able to get into a LOT of museums in the country for free. It is called Smithsonian Museum Day and is sponsored by the Smithsonian Magazine.
Two museums in Salem are taking part in this special day. You must go to the website and get your tickets there, so please don't just show up at the door and expect to get in for free. Here is the link:
Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day and it will take you right to the Salem museums that are participating -- the Salem Witch Museum and the Phillips House.
Once you are on that site you can search for other museums throughout the country.
This is something you really don't want to miss.
I hope you enjoy your day, and be sure to stop in to the Tavern at the Hawthorne Hotel for lunch or a beverage either before or after your visit.

Hats Off to the Hawthorne Team
Today we received a lovely thank you letter from one of our clients and good friends here at the Hotel, Maryann Curtin. Every year Maryann and the North Shore Bad Girls host a fund raiser tea at the Hotel for the Hospice of the North Shore. This year the event raised over $10,000 for this worthy cause.
We are always happy to assist a variety of non-profits in the North Shore area, and this entity in particular is one that is very dear to us.
If you would like to see the previous blog post on this event, click here: Hats On For Hospice.
Thank you so much Maryann for such a thoughtful note.
I hope to see you here,

Two Happy Endings in One Morning
Lost and Found in Hotels
If you have read this blog for any length of time, you will already know our opinion about dealing with Lost and Found. If you are new to this blog you can easily do a search on any topic, so feel free. The short answer is that it is a hassle that (some) people can be careless, especially because the most common reaction is to blame the hotel staff for taking their things.
So, when we have a day that starts off like this one did it often seems like it is not going to be a good day. However, today both situations were resolved, each with a happy ending.
The first thing this morning we received a phone call from a guest who felt certain they had left a special luggage-insert laundry bag on their bed yesterday, and when they returned it was gone. We searched the laundry high and low, going through everything (read a lot of bins of soiled linens) to try to find this cloth bag, and then searched the room thinking maybe it could have fallen behind the bed. No luck.
Everyone was depressed because this was something important to our guest, and they were sure our housekeeper had something to do with its disappearance. We offered the guest an apology in the form of something that would show our seriousness, and simply asked if they found it upon returning home to let us know, because we really felt that housekeeper would never be so careless.
About 10 minutes ago I received a phone call from the guest. The item was found in the trunk of their car. It had never even been in the hotel. Thanks all around, and a nice tip for the housekeeper was in the offing for "offending" her (guest's words.)
Happy ending number one.
The second call was from a guest who was missing a wedding band. They last remember seeing it on the edge of the sink or the shower. In that case we had to wait until the guests who were currently occupying the room checked out.
As the guests departed that room they turned in the ring that they had found wedged in the drain of the bathtub. We are so happy to have honest guests!
Happy ending number two.
Lessons to be learned, dear guests?
Please remember that our staff members are very honest, here at the historic Hawthorne Hotel, and it is a good practice to not put small things near drains, because you never know about the situation that could occur.
I hope to see you here.

Suite 512
Here is the next suite in our series of photographic essays of our unique suites. I hope you enjoy seeing each one. Each of our suites in the hotel occupies a corner of the building, so there is a lovely amount of light for each of them. The "12" suites all overlook historic Salem, with some windows looking out toward the harbor, and others towards the Peabody Essex Museum and their collection of historic homes just across the street.

Winner of Our "Ansel-Adams-in-You" Contest
We are pleased to announce the winner of our "Ansel-Adams-in-You" contest is Stanley Slysz. Here is his take on an Ansel Adams-like water's edge photo shot in Essex County.
We look forward to welcoming him to the Hawthorne Hotel , as he is the winner of a two-night stay here at the Hawthorne Hotel, along with the PEM package goodies that are part of our PEM Overnight Package.
It was certainly a difficult choice for the judges to make as we had many excellent submissions. Here are the two runners-up.
Thank you to everyone who entered this contest. We hope you enjoyed participating.
