Quick, Casual Lunches in the Atrium at PEM


Did you know that you are welcomed to dine at the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) any day that it is open, and you do not need to pay admission to simply dine there?  Just let the guard at the door know what you plan to do, and he or she will take care of the rest.

On Friday, June 1 we will launch a new menu in the Atrium.  Fresh new items will be offered for you sandwich-lovers, at no increase in price!  We offer both specialty sandwiches that are named for the various art collections at PEM, as well as custom-made sandwiches.  You can even call ahead and get them to-go!  Simply give a call at 978-542-1516 to place your order.

Sweet Cake Toppers


This past weekend we catered a lovely wedding a the Peabody Essex Museum's East India Marine Hall.  The cake toppers were handmade by an artist in new York.  The "bride" bird is made from vintage material. They are so cute I had to share, and with permission from Jaime Harrison and Andy Rice, the lovely couple, here they are:

Hawthorne Hotel's Flags of the Week ~~ May 28 through June 3, 2012


Here are this week's flags.  There were no special requests.

Monday , May 28 Tajikistan and New Jersey


Tajikistan was the last of the former Soviet republics to reveal a new flag(TajikПарчами Тоҷикистон/پرچم تاجیکستان), which was adopted in November 1992. The one common link between this and the 1953 SSR flag is the choice of colors - red, white and green. The former Tajik SSR, sometimes referred to as the "Tadzhik SSR" (RussianТаджикская ССР), added white and green stripes to the flag of the USSR. The striping also emphasizes Tajikistan'sPersian culture, as Iran's flag has the same stripes (although red and green are reversed).
The crown represents the Tajik people, the name itself arguably is derived fromtajvar, which means "crowned". In traditional Tajik cultural aspects the number "seven" is a symbol of perfection, the embodiment of happiness and the provider of virtue. According to Tajik legendIslamic heaven is composed of seven beautiful orchids, separated by seven mountains each with a glowingstar on top. The middle white stripe is one-and-a-half times the size of the red and green stripes. The red represents the unity of the nation and the symbol of the sun and victory; the white represents purity, cotton, the snow on the mountains and the unity of the people; and green stands for the spiritual meaning of Islam and represents the generosity of nature of the country. The symbol charged in the middle of the white stripe is a crown surmounted by an arc of seven stars.


Tuesday , May 29 United Republic of Tanzania and New Mexico

The Daughters of the American Revolution pushed New Mexico to design a contemporary and unique flag in 1920. A contest to design the new state flag was won by Dr. Harry Mera ofSanta Fe, New Mexico. Mera was an archaeologist who was familiar with the Zia sun symbolfound at Zia Pueblo on a 19th century pot. The symbol has sacred meaning to the Zia. Four is a sacred number which symbolizes the Circle of Life: four winds, four seasons, four directions, and four sacred obligations. The circle binds the four elements of four together. His winning design is the flag that the state uses today.[1] The salutation, “I salute the flag of the State of New Mexico and the Zia symbol of perfect friendship among united cultures," was many years ago commonly recited in New Mexico public schools after the United States pledge of allegiance.


Wednesday, May 30 Thailand and New York

The flag of the Kingdom of Thailand shows five horizontal stripes in the colours red, white, blue, white and red, with the middle blue stripe being twice as wide as each of the other four. The design was adopted on 28 September 1917, according to the royal decree about the flag in that year; the Thai name for the flag is ธงไตรรงค์ (Thong Trairong), meaning tricolour flag. The colours are said to stand for nation-religion-king, an unofficial motto of Thailand, red for the land and people, white for Theravada Buddhism and blue for the monarchy, as having been the auspicious colour of King Rama VI. As the king had declared war on Germany that July, some note the flag now bore the same colours as those of Britain and France.

A Day Trip From Salem to Newburyport, MA

The Essex National Heritage Area offers a series of "Photo Safaris" to different areas of Essex County. The photos you see here were the result of my taking one of those safaris today, to Newburyport, MA. The cameras were provided by Olympus through Hunt's Cameras. We had a 45-minute seminar, were loaned brand new digital cameras, and a map, and some guidance along the way, and we walked around Newburyport taking photos. I have to tell you it was one of the most delightful things I have done, and I am pleased to share this photo journey with you here.

Free Walking Tour of Salem

One of our clients that we enjoy doing business with has recently asked us to help her promote an event that might have interest to both our guests and our staff. Since the event is free, and focuses on a place we love, we were happy to help. Here is the flyer for the event, which is a free walking tour of Salem.

We Host Lynn Tech Culinary Students

Yesterday we hosted a group of eight students from Lynn Tech who are all participating in the culinary program there. Alaina Ferriero of the Hawthorne Hotel Dining Services Team worked with the North Shore Career Center who arranged for this particular group to come spend some time in the kitchens of a multi-unit food and beverage facility.

The participants included students:  Saly Vongsa,    Kaymarie Pizzaro,    Robin Fuentas,    Nykeva Patterson,    Linda Uth,    Julie Kong,    Amariliz Hernandez,    Meilissa Mendoza.   Also on the trip were staff: Bonnie Carr, Co-op Coordinator;  Sally Glowik, Guidance Counselor at Lynn Tech.;  Steve Lopez, Culinary Instructor at Lynn Tech.

Giving tours of our hotel to students from all differing grade levels is part of what we do to be fully participating members of the community where we work.  We also regularly have interns working at the hotel and our offsite division, and we participate in other kinds of work-study programs with the schools in Salem and the region.

I hope you enjoy learning a little bit more about what we do at the Hawthorne Hotel.  We are happy to be more than just a business, and want you to know more about how we "give back" to the place we love -- Salem,  North Shore, Massachusetts.

Salem is THE Place for First-run Movies for the Long Weekend

If you have the opportunity to catch a movie this weekend, you will definitely want to do that here in Salem.  CinemaSalem, located just one block from the Hawthorne Hotel, has all the best movies that are out right now, and there are a number of reasons you should come see them here.  1) Less expensive than the megaplexes.  2)  Real butter on their popcorn.  3)  A friendly, neighborhood theater experience.  4)  Other food options that actually appeal to adults, like a great selection of teas, Fresca, and air-popped popcorn too.  5)  Close enough to the Tavern at the Hawthorne Hotel to have a before- or after-theater meal here.

We've got some great movies for your Memorial Day weekend. Let's get right to the lineup!

Men in Black 3 has been getting some great reviews, including several that mention its surprising emotional depth. Digital Spy: "A funny, exciting, spectacular and surprisingly poignant thrill-ride -- definitely worth two of your Earth hours." Screen Space: "There is genuine heart in the reteaming of J and K, certainly sufficient to warrant MIB3's existence; enough, perhaps, to even trumpet it." Time Out New York: "Apparently, it's okay to be nostalgic again, especially when the emotional payoff is this big-a wonderful surprise." Once in awhile I get a chance to preview one of our films before it opens at CinemaSalem (Okay, my wife and I saw it at Hollywood Hits). I'm prepared to say that The Kid With a Bike is one of the best films of the year. It's simple, quiet, deeply-affecting, and not to be missed. But don't take my word for it; listen to the 96% positive raves on RottenTomatoes.com. NPR: "Within its tight 87 minutes, not a lot happens, unless you count the saving of a life." New York Times: "A quietly rapturous film about love and redemption from Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne." Washington Post: "Cyril is one of the most inspiringly resilient, self-aware young characters to arrive on-screen in recent memory." Denver Post: "It's two-plus hours of visual brawn, unexpected heartbeats and welcome humor." Rolling Stone: "All hail Joss Whedon, the warrior king of this dizzying, dazzling epic. The Avengers is Transformers with a brain, a heart and a working sense of humor."

Marvel's The Avengers will screen on Friday at (4:00), 7:00 and 9:50; Saturday at (12:45), (4:00), 7:00 and 9:50; Sunday and Monday at (12:45), (4:00) and 7:00; and Tuesday-Thursday at (4:00) and 7:00.
The True 1692, our historically-accurate 3D film about the Salem Witch Trials, will screen Friday-Sunday at 2:00 and 6:30, and Monday-Thursday at 6:30.

There's quite a bit of excitement building around the opening of This Perfect Place! A Natural History of the Massachusetts North Shore, a beautiful 35-minute introduction to the history and animals who live in this place we call home, which will open on June 1.

Hawthorne Hotel Ballroom in the 1930s

Thanks to a friendly local, we now have not one, but two photos of large events in the Grand Ballroom of the Hawthorne Hotel that took place during the 1930s.  Here are the images for your enjoyment.  I took some close-up photos of each of them so you could see some of the detail. The first four images are of the newest photo to come to our collection of memorabilia.  Interestingly it is of the seventh annual Christmas party of the Paramount-Empire-Plaza Theatres.  If you will remember back about a month ago I posted photos of the "new-to-us" artwork in the Tavern.  Two of the pieces are posters for entertainment events that took place at the Empire Theatre here in Salem (no longer extant.)



 I love the fact that you can see a lot of young people in this photo.  Clearly working in the local theater was a job for teenagers in the 1930s just as it is today.
I wonder if the musical entertainment was hired for this event, or came from the Theatre itself?
 The photo below is one that we have had for as long as I have been with the Hawthorne Hotel, some 13+ years now.  As you can see the rooms was set more formally for this corporate event.

Whenever I take people on a tour of the hotel I like to stop in front of this photo and relate a story I find relevant to the food and beverage side of our business.  As you can see in the photo, the room was set with long banquet tables, people sitting shoulder to shoulder.  This was the style in virtually all banquet settings up until the time that John F. Kennedy became President.  Jackie Kennedy did not like that style of table, and when she became the First Lady she basically banned that kind of seating at White House events, deciding that round tables made for more friendly conversations at banquets and other types of meal functions.

So today, in most banquet settings, round tables are now the common set-up choice because of her influence, which extended far beyond pillbox hats and Chanel suits, and as it turned out, was much more long-lasting.

 This event was the 59th anniversary celebration of the Salem Electric Lighting Co.

Oh My! We Love Being Loved by Our Guests!!


After each event here at the Hawthorne Hotel we send out event evaluations for our guests to be able to let us know how we have done.  The following are excerpts from such an evaluation that I received today.  Because this client was so effusive in praise of our team members, I thought you might like to read some parts of it as well.  So here you are, looking over my shoulder at my mail regarding a graduation party held here on May 11.

Lindsay Otis was so pleasant and easy to work with! I appreciated her suggestions and expertise in planning this special function for my son. She is wonderful asset to the Hotel staff as she maintains great professionalism, all the while exuding friendliness, kindness and an overall genuine personality to the consumer.

Our bartender, Scott O’Meara was the best! Our guests  enjoyed a wonderful selection of available beverage choices, but, most of all, they enjoyed Scott! Scott’s smile and infectious personality added wonderfully to our experience and we are grateful for his efforts at making this day memorable for our family. Kristen Doucet was terrific! She took care of our every food need, replenishing the buffet as needed, helping to make our dining experience as best as it could be. I found Kristen to be a warm and caring person; she was great to have on our “team!”

Patrice was phenomenal! I felt that we were in great hands during this whole day. Patrice gave me the feeling that she would take care of everything and she did! She is a wonderful person to have in this role as she knows how to assist people in a professional yet caring and quiet way. I very much enjoyed having Patrice there to guide our celebration into success.

The food quality and presentation was superb! Family and friends continue to brag about how delicious the food tasted … certainly everyone had plenty to eat and everyone was completely satisfied!

A few of our guests commented that the ladies restroom was so “pretty.” Obviously, the hotel cares about every aspect of a function.

My son’s college graduation will always stand out as a memorable day in our lives. Included in our memories will be the extraordinary celebration we experienced at the Hawthorne Hotel. In spite of the upper class beauty and historic recognition of this building, it remains just that – a building. It is a structure compiled of wood, steel, mortar and other various types of materials which, although adding pleasingly to the beauty and aesthetics of the eye, remain limited to effecting beauty and aesthetics of the heart and soul. The people we encounter each and every day can offer such an array of warmth, care, and concern, tugging at our emotions and feelings to our core. If people give their heart, magical things can happen. We feel awakened and energized by the interactions we have had with one another and our human spirit becomes enflamed with a true sense of why we were placed here on earth to begin with. Lindsay, Patrice, Scott and Kristen touched our heart and soul and we recognize them for bringing so much of themselves to our day. On behalf our entire group of family and friends, we thank you abundantly.

I actually had tears in my eyes reading this lovely evaluation.  This guest spelled out for us all what it means to receive great service, and that great service is at the core of what we try to offer each and every guest who comes into our hotel.

Hawthorne Hotel's Flags of the Week ~~ May 21 through 26, 2012


Every Sunday we post a list of the flags that we will fly in the coming week on this blog.  We show images of a few of them, along with some basis information about those flags.  We hope you enjoy learning just a little bit more about the world around us.

Monday , May 21 Sri Lanka and Minnesota


The flag of Sri Lanka, also called the Lion Flag, consists of a gold lion, holding a kastane sword in its right fore paw, in front of a crimson background with four golden bo leaves, one in each corner. Around the background is a yellow border, and to its left are 2 vertical stripes of equal size in saffron and green, with the saffron stripe closest to the lion. The lion represents the Sinhalese ethnicity and the bravery of the Sri Lankan nation while the four Bo leaves represent Mettā, Karuna, Mudita and Upekkha. The orange stripe represents the Sri Lankan Tamils, the green stripe represents Sri Lankan Moors, and the maroon background represents the majority of Sinhalese, like the lion, this is the color used in early flags of Sri Lanka by kings.

It was adopted in 1950 following the recommendations of a committee appointed by the 1st Prime Minister of Ceylon, The Rt Hon D.S. Senanayake.



Tuesday , May 22 Sudan and Mississippi

The committee to design a State Flag (for Mississippi) was appointed by legislative action February 7, 1894, and provided that the flag reported by the committee should become the official flag. The committee recommended for the flag "one with width two-thirds of its length; with the union square, in width two-thirds of the width of the flag; the ground of the union to be red and a broad blue saltier thereon, bordered with white and emblazoned with thirteen (13) mullets or five-pointed stars, corresponding with the number of the original States of the Union; the field to be divided into three bars of equal width, the upper one blue, the center one white, and the lower one extending the whole length of the flag.

Wednesday , May 23 Suriname and Missouri


The flag of Suriname is formed by five horizontal bands of green (top, double width), white, red (quadruple width), white, and green (double width). There is a large, yellow, five-pointed star centered in the red band.
The flag was adopted on November 25, 1975, upon the independence of Suriname. The star represents the unity of all ethnic groups, the red stripe stands for progress and love, the green for hope and fertility, and the white bands for peace and justice.

Food, Glorious Food (Preview Photos)

 
On Friday we did a four-hour photo shoot of our new banquet menu items in preparation for our new website which will debut in early June.  All of these photos are ones I snapped with my iPhone 4S during the shoot.  If you think these look good, just wait until you see the "real" photos~
 Crudités with Dill Dip
We hired Kristina Young Photography to do this important project for us, and so far we are thrilled that we did.  Kristina is so easy to work with, professional yet laid back, clearly focused on the work at hand and still nice to be around, understanding of changing priorities and excited to photograph what we need to have done.
 Mediterranean Station

 Bass with lobster risotto and beurre blanc.
 Free-range chicken with strawberry-walnut relish, shredded Brussels Sprouts.
Kristina with her assistant, Meggie Young, making sure that the natural lighting was just right.  Our Grand Ballroom has banks of windows that provided just the right light for Kristina, who prefers that over the look obtained with artificial lighting.

 Fresh Local Haddock encrusted with Pistachios.
 Chicken with Mediterranean Sauce of Artichokes, Red Peppers and Fresh Oregano
Dessert trio of Chocolate-Covered Cheesecake "Pop", Handmade Pecan Pie "Mini" and Tiny Eclair.
