Our Own Claire Kallelis Riding to Honor Nina Vickers
FIRST LADY OF AMESBURY GETS ON THE SADDLE AGAIN
Rides Pan Mass Challenge to Support a Worthy Cause
Join us at the Hawthorne Hotel on Thursday July 12 from 6 to 9 pm!
Salem, MA (June 5, 2012)-- Can you imagine a cause worth bicycling 200 miles? Claire Kallelis can and is excited and honored to be a part of Team LUNGstrong! Wife of Amesbury mayor Thatcher Kezer and Assistant General Manager and Food and Beverage Director of the historic Hawthorne Hotel in Salem, Claire Kallelis has spent many months behind bars...handle bars, that is. She used to be a long-distance cyclist, and has traveled from Maine to Florida (1,600 miles) and, in 1993, from Los Angeles to Boston (3,400 miles). Both were to benefit the American Cancer Society.
“These two rides were such a life-altering experience,” says Kallelis, “and truly inspired me to appreciate each and every moment that life brings. I have lost many family members and friends to cancer and I was honored to be one of those 45 riders.”
The team manager of LUNGstrong, Diane Legg has been living with lung cancer for almost seven years. With three children, Legg has worked tirelessly to raise awareness about the disease. Team LUNGstrong’s ride will be in memory of those who have succumbed to lung cancer and those who fight on a daily basis to survive it.
Claire will be participating in the Pan Mass Challenge, riding from Sturbridge to Provincetown, a 200- mile ride. Kallelis is riding with fellow Amesbury resident and friend, Jane Hoggard. They are hoping to raise $10,000 for cancer research at Dana Farber, and know all their North Shore friends will come to support them.
Mayor of Amesbury, Thatcher Kezer, says of his wife, “Claire has always been passionate about long- distance bike riding to fight cancer. By riding for Team LUNGStrong, she is able to combine that passion with her desire to serve the community of Amesbury and to help Diane Legg in her efforts to fight lung cancer. I'm happy to support Claire, Diane and the whole team in their efforts.”
In honor of Nina Vickers, a dear friend of Claire’s and of the Hawthorne Hotel’s, who passed away from cancer in 2008, Claire is holding a fundraiser on July 12 at the Hawthorne Hotel from 6-9pm. Tickets are $20 at the door, and will include appetizers and entertainment by the Buckley Brothers. A raffle, auction, wine tasting and a cash bar will be available.
As Food & Beverage Director at the Hawthorne Hotel, Claire certainly knows how to throw a party and this should be a event to remember. All proceeds from the event will go toward LUNGstrong. For more information, call 978-825-4360.
“We can’t wait to see everyone at the fundraiser and again at the ride,” says Kallelis. “Visit www.pmc.org/egifts for more information--and do yourself a favor and take that old bike of yours for a ride, it will be worth it!”
