Cinema Salem News of the Week
If you are already a follower of this blog you will know that I am a big fan of our local, independently-owned movie theater, Cinema Salem, which is conveniently located just one block from the Hawthorne Hotel. There are many reasons for my "big fan" status, including real butter on the popcorn, an excellent selection of hot tea, Fresca in bottles, great movies including documentaries and foreign films, low cost for high value, and their participation in our community and its needs.
So I am always happy to help promote what they are doing by sharing the excellent newsletter they put out like clockwork each week. Here is the current issue:
As you might have heard, The Avengers was huge last weekend, breaking the single weekend box office all-time record. At other times of the year, we might be able to hold onto a movie like that for a month or more.
But as summer arrives, we find ourselves moving new movies in every 2-3 weeks. So if you're one of the people who've said, "I'll go see The Avengers at CinemaSalem because it's my favorite theater, but I'll wait until June", you might be disappointed.
So why don't you come this weekend to see the most popular movie in the world, and/or one of our other similarly excellent offerings. Here's the full lineup!
Now Playing: Dark Shadows (PG13); The Hunter (R); Marvel's The Avengers (PG13); The Five-Year Engagement (R): The Pirates! Band of Misfits (PG); and The True 1692 3D!
Johnny Depp and Tim Burton arrive at CinemaSalem on Friday in Dark Shadows, which is garnering praise from critics all over the globe. Australia's Quickflix: "[Burton's] co-conspirators Depp, Bonham Carter, and the shaman that renders them all ageless have returned to wreak scenery-eating havoc once again, and the resulting concoction is significantly more delectable than anything they've conjured in some time." Filmink Australia: "Packed with memorable moments and terrific performances." MovieFix: "Visually stunning and delightfully bawdy, Dark Shadows is worth its return from the grave."
Dark Shadows will screen on Friday at (5:00), 7:30 and 10:00; Saturday at (12:00), (2:30), (5:00), 7:30 and 10:00; Sunday at (12:00), (2:30), (5:00) and 7:30; and Monday-Thursday at (5:00) and 7:30.
New this week in the versatile and valuable Screening Room is The Hunter, also gathering critical raves. Hollywood Chicago: "Excellent cinematography and another mesmerizing performance by Willem Dafoe keep it engaging to the point that it develops a fascinating rhythm of its own." Cinemalogue: "A taut Australian drama that works both as an intimate character study and as a primal man-against-nature thriller."
What is it with Australia this week? The Hunter will screen on Friday at 7:15 and 9:20; Saturday at (12:15), (2:40), (4:40), 7:15 and 9:20; Sunday at (12:15), (2:40), (4:40) and 7:15; and Monday-Thursday at (4:40) and 7:15.
The aforementioned biggest, one-week, grossing movie of all time returns this week to CinemaSalem. Were you aware that the CinemaScore rating for the film (based on exit polling of attendees) was an unprecedented perfect score of A+?! Truly you have no excuse not to visit the theater to catch this flick, at least according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune: "This film is stylish, intelligent and, one hopes, influential on the next generation of superhero movies; it should leave a lasting legacy." The Boston Globe: "You don't need to be a "comic-book person" to find the set pieces exhilarating. But if you are such a person, or a fan of the movies that comic books turn into, The Avengers feels like the moment you've been waiting for." The Atlantic: "Ultimately, it all comes back to Whedon: His clear vision for each character and how they might be profitably intermingled; his unexpected knack for action choreography; his funny, tender, immaculately constructed script."
Marvel's The Avengers will screen on Friday at (3:45), 6:45 and 9:50; Saturday at (12:30), (3:45), 6:45 and 9:50; Sunday at (12:30), (3:45) and 6:45; and Monday-Thursday at (4:00) and 6:45.
We're stacking The Five-Year Engagement with The Pirates! Band of Misfits this week. Five-Year will screen on Friday and Saturday at 7:00 and 9:40, and Sunday-Thursday at 7:00.
The lovable The Pirates! Band of Misfits will screen on Friday at (4:30), Saturday and Sunday at (11:45), (2:00), and (4:30); and Monday-Thursday at (4:30).
We've noticed great interest among Salem tourists for The True 1692, the riveting 3D film about the Salem Witch Trials, which will screen Friday-Sunday at 2:00 and 6:30, and Monday-Thursday at 6:30.
Don't forget that the premiere of This Perfect Place! A Natural History of the Massachusetts North Shore, a ravishing 35-minute tour of the area we call home, is coming up on June 1.
Thanks for supporting CinemaSalem!
I hope to see you here, or there.
