Hawthorne Hotel Bride Circa 1943

Regina Camarda of Salem was married at the Hawthorne Hotel on November 28, 1943. She was recently in the Tavern having lunch, and we snapped this photo of her.

She was thrilled with the special attention, as well as with her lunch.

We love being part of the fabric of people's lives, whether visitors from out of town here for vacation or a conference or wedding, or just a place for locals to dine, and reminisce.

Absolutely Darling Dogs

What does the well-dressed visiting Chihuahua from California wear when he is staying at the Hawthorne Hotel in January?  Well, these two were seen sightseeing around Salem, MA in their winter jackets with hoods, no less!

These two handsome long-haired Chihuahuas are Bruno and Duke, and they are from North Hollywood, California, here visiting with their owner, John Enos.  Bruno is a frequent guest, having just completed his third stay with us.

What more can I say, but aren't they just darling?!!  And thanks so much to Elizabeth Manzi for snapping these photos so I could share them with you, fair blog reader.

I hope you love the fact that we are a pet-friendly hotel and I hope to see you (and your pet) here soon.


P.S. Mr. Enos reports that the dogs are still enjoying their dog toys that we gave them during their stay, now that they are back at home.

Why I Love Social Media

Sometimes I get an out of the ordinary response to what I see as a fairly ordinary post.  Today was one of those days. 

When I opened my email, there was a lovely, albeit brief, email from a guest who had a wedding reception in the hotel in 1960!!  Here is the email, which was written to me in response to yesterday's post about our award from WeddingWire:

I CONCUR: MY WEDDING RECEPTION WAS HELD ON 9.5/60 in the ballroom of

I wanted to be sure I understood it correctly, so I wrote back, as follows:
Subject: Re: Hawthorne Hotel RESPONSE
Wow! Let me see if I am understanding this email correctly? You were
married here on September 5, 1960, 50-1/2 years ago? And you still
remember what a great job we did in providing a wonderful reception
spot for you?

I would love to put your testimonial on our website. It certainly
shows the longevity of our excellent service. Would you be willing to
assist us with that?

And I quickly received the following email in return:


Yes, of couse; we were married at the church down the street on the
boulevard, and enjoyed a brief wedding breakfast and reception in the
ballroom. I still have and cherish the silver cake server given to us
as a gift. Thank you

and this next one as well:
In addition, I spent eight years at what use to be St. Mary's School on
the boulevard. On very cold, windy days and a long walk home ahead of
us., we use to cut through the hotel lobby to avoid the bitterly cold
wind--the staff was pleasant and never chastised us. During those
days, the hotel had revolving doors. Thank you, again.
and this:

Hello, Julie: How may I help to promote the Hawthorne? Although we
had a wonderful start, unfortunately, the marriage endured only 10
years, however, the memories will last a lifetime



I just love how this all unfolded, and fully intend to connect with this lovely guest who so freely shared such great memories.  This kind of oral history is so important to collect, as any historian might tell you.  It is rare when a business manager (such as a hotel general manager) has the opportunity to make such a contact, and I am so grateful to social media for making these kinds of contacts possible.  I am not sure that they would have been so easily established any other way.

Salem Chamber of Commerce

Today the Salem Chamber of Commerce confirmed the election of me, Juli Lederhaus, General Manager of the Hawthorne Hotel, as the new President of the Salem Chamber of Commerce for 2011.
This is not a first for me; I was President of the Salem Chamber in 2006.  The President is usually elected as part of a succession plan, but the plan for this year came up with a bit of a hole when someone in line for the position suddenly left the area.  I agreed to step in when approached by the Executive Director, Rinus Ooshoek.

This year the focus of the Salem Chamber will be on "Local, Mobile and Social," so stay tuned!  If you are a business person in Salem, and not already a member of the Salem Chamber, now would be a perfect time to join.

New Headboards Are Joining Our New Beds

Because we recently changed a number of our beds from queens to kings, we had to get new headboards to match the bigger beds. Since our furniture is vintage, hardwood furniture, that is not available anymore, we decided to have upholstered headboards made for these rooms.

Today we installed one of them in one of our rooms, and I snapped this photo with my iPhone so you could see what was going on.

Italy Comes to the Hawthorne Hotel

At the very end of our most recent snowstorm, we received a group of twenty tour operators from Italy, to have lunch and tour our historic hotel.

It was a happy coincidence that we were flying the Italian flag on the front of our hotel, as part of our formal flag program.

We thought we would ask these wonderful people to give you their opinion about the Hawthorne Hotel while standing under their country's flag, and they were happy to oblige us.

I hope you enjoy seeing yet another part of our daily life here at the hotel -- this is the part where we work towards getting more guests to come from all over the world to visit our wonderful city of Salem, Massachusetts, and to have their groups and visitors stay with us.

Recipe From Chef Steve Nelson of the Hawthorne Hotel

Every so often we receive a recipe request from a guest.  This is the most-requested Hawthorne Hotel recipe, so I thought I would share it with you, fair blog reader, on this wintry, icy day.


As served at Nathaniel’s and our Tavern, as well as in Banquets

1 Cup butter

1/2 Cup celery diced

1 Cup onion diced

1 Cup all purpose flour

1Qt. Clam broth

16 Oz..Fish stock or more clam broth

6 Oz. Chopped clams

6 Oz small shrimp or shrimp pieces

6 Oz. Scallops

6 Oz. firm fleshed fish

2 Cups half and half cream

2 Cups diced potatoes (parboiled)

Salt, pepper and thyme

Recipe makes almost 1 gallon of soup, enough to feed 15 to 20.

• Heat butter, add onions, celery and onions, cook relatively slowly until clear.

• Add flour, stir well. Reduce heat to medium low and cook 10 minutes, stirring often. Careful not to brown.

• Add clam and fish broth and cook 15-minutes stirring often.

• Add all seafood, salt, pepper and thyme. Cook on medium heat until the mixture has come to a full simmer and the seafood is fully cooked.

• Add heated cream and cooked potatoes. Bring back up to temperature and serve with fresh ground pepper.

Of course, if cooking is not your thing, or you don't want to go to this much work, just stop in to either of our restaurants and order a cup or bowl for yourself.  You will not be disappointed.  It is truly delicious.

Milestone Events at the Hawthorne Hotel

At our staff holiday party this month we recognized three milestone events for members of our team. There are photos and detail below:

Steve Nelson, our Executive Chef was recognized for his 25 years of service to the Hawthorne Hotel.  That "chef's hat" is really a cake, and the entire thing was edible, from the hat, to the knife to the "marble slab" on which it all sat.  This cake was provided by Montilio's Bakery -- the company that does most of our wedding and other special occasion cakes.

Also pictured with Steve are Claire Kallelis and Karen Cotton -- members of our team who have been here nearly as long as Steve has.

Paula Laureau was also recognized for her 25 years with the Hawthorne Hotel.  She is our night auditor and overnight manager, and we are so happy to have her as part of our team. 

Last but hardly least, you see Donna Daly being called up to the microphone as we wished her a wonderful "semi-retirement".  Donna has been with us for just over 10 years, and for the majority of those years has been our Purchasing and Receiving Manager.  Her plan is to work part-time for us on the weekends as she enjoys a somewhat more relaxed pace, enjoying life a bit more.

How to Make Certain Your Event (Wedding or Whatever) is the Best

Last month we received this thank you note, which was very complimentary of the Hawthorne Hotel regarding a wedding which took place here. I thought you might enjoy reading it as much as we did.

These guests were particularly happy with Christine Turner's work in pulling all of the details together.

This is one of the key issues that not every guest considers when booking a wedding venue (or for that matter, any other venue for a special event.) The quality, amount of experience, attitude and aptitude of the person doing the booking is of extraordinary importance, since a beautiful site, or the best chef, or even the most skilled wait-staff cannot make up for details that are not properly recorded and communicated, both to the client and to the staff. This is the role of the catering manager -- and it is a role that every member of our catering management staff fills at the highest caliber.

So, when you are considering a venue for any special event, please look very carefully into the background of the person doing the booking. Inquire about how long they have been in their position, and ask to see a reference list or testimonial book or page on their website. Talk to other people who have used that venue. Do research on line to find out how the details went. You will find that effort is time well spent.

State of the Hawthorne Hotel

While many of the "end of year" wrap-up kinds of articles are written at the end of the year, I never wrote one before, on this blog, but thought I would today.

I had the opportunity to stay in the Hawthorne Hotel during the most recent blizzard, and that made me think about all that we had accomplished in 2010.  I thought you might like to hear about things from that perspective -- that of a hotel manager staying in the hotel she manages:

During 2010 we were able to put all new beds, and new bed frames in all of the rooms.  In addition to new mattresses and box springs, we put mattress encasements on all of these new bedding pieces.  These encasements will keep the mattresses and box springs from ever being a harboring place for dust mites and other critters. 

Before we did this project, we brought in one set of the proposed mattress/box springs in order to try them out.  We put that set in one of our most highly-occupied rooms, and then after a couple of months I called each guest who had stayed there to inquire about their sleeping comfort. 

The feedback was all positive, remarkably so, and therefore we went with the local mattress company, Gardner Mattress, to provide all of the new beds.  It was great to be able to take this time to test these out, but even more pleasing to us to be able to use and support a local (Salem, MA) manufacturer this way. 

Many people espouse the idea of supporting the local economy, but sometimes when it gets right down to spending a lot of money for something, there is often the need to take the cheaper route.  However, we were also working from the experience of having used Gardner Mattresses in our rooms for the past dozen years, with great outcomes.  Now I may have to buy a new set for my own bedroom, because sleeping on that new set was so very comfortable, it made me realize perhaps it was time for a change in my own home.

Now that I have also had a chance to spend the night on one of our new beds, I can personally assure you that you will probably never have a more comfortable nights sleep than you will here at the historic Hawthorne Hotel.

In addition, when I travel I usually always bring my own pillow, and the night I stayed in one of our rooms I realized that I never need to that again when staying at the Hawthorne, as our pillows are perfect -- they are a synthetic down-substitute that really acts like a down pillow.  I could not have been more comfortable.

As I put my iPhone in the AM/FM clock radio with docking station to charge, and to play my own music for the evening, and plugged my laptop into the handy outlets in the base of the desk lamp, I realized these are all things that we have done to improve our guests' experience in our rooms.  Those new lamps with the easy to use plugs are perfect!

In the morning I had a quick look at the news on our new flat-panel TVs, and have to say that having them  wall-mounted made for more space in a cozy room.

While reflecting on our hotel operations for 2010, I remembered that this was the year we upgraded and improved our property management system.  This new system, called RoomMaster by InnQuest, allows us a much easier way to take and handle reservations, making our desk staff more efficient, and giving them more time to be friendly to our guests.  This "upgraded friendliness" factor has come through loud and clear in how our guests perceive us, and our TripAdvisor reviews have been greatly improved because our clerks can now focus more on our guests, and less on an antiquated computer system.

This list is hardly complete -- many of the capital upgrades we do in the hotel each year are things that just have to be done, such as reupholstering furniture, replacing boilers, replacing the sheers on all of the windows in the hotel (there are a LOT of windows), and even changing out the chandeliers in the Grand Ballroom and Sophia's.

We are currently in the planning stages of MANY more upgrades to the Hawthorne Hotel.  These additional improvements are very exciting, and I cannot wait to write about them as they happen, right here on our Daily Diary.

Hawthorne Hotel Announces Employee of the Year Awards for 2010

At our annual holiday party for all of our team members this week, we announced our Employee of the Year awards. We annually recognize our top staff members in two categories -- Full-time and Part-time, and here are our winners.  In the first photo below you can see how surprised Claire-Marie was, and how happy her fellow teammates were in her award:

Claire-Marie Gauthier was selected as our Full-time Employee of the Month.  Claire-Marie works in our banquet department as the liquor coordinator for the Peabody Essex Museum, as well as here in the Hawthorne Hotel as a banquet coordinator.  Claire-Marie is such a dedicated and helpful member of our team -- we can always count on her to do her job extraordinarily well -- she is always right there for us, and does all of her work with a smile.

Runners-up for the Full-time award were Jana Mason and Luke Healy.
Claire Kallelis, Assistant General Manager; Juli Lederhaus, General Manager; Claire-Marie Gauthier; Liz Dube, Banquet Manager

Part-time employees of the year winners and runners'-up -- KrisTina Wheeler, Brooke O'Keefe and Elizabeth Manzi.
KrisTina Wheeler was selected as the Part-time Employee of the Month.  KrisTina works in the administration area of the hotel, fulfilling many tasks -- she is my administrative assistant, but she also handles many human resource functions, including writing an awesome monthly employee newsletter, and helps out in many other departments of the hotel. 

The decision on who should receive these prestigious awards was not easy, as all of the nominees are stars in the eyes of their managers and co-workers.  However, these two team members are so deserving of this recognition, and we are all very happy for them.

Wendy Walsh Named Employee of the Month for December 2010

At our annual employee holiday party this week, we were able to catch up with one of our "stealth" employees, Wendy Walsh, to honor her with the part-time employee of the month award for December.

I say "stealth" employees because Wendy seems to work almost in an undercover manner -- she fills in when we most need her, when there are few other team members around.  She is quiet in her demeanor, but always in control in a pleasant way, helping us to do almost whatever it is that needs to be done.

Our "Hidden Gem"

The Hawthorne offers guests the option of dining in our cozy Tavern or the more sophisticated Nathaniel's. We are always thrilled to hear about pleasant dining experiences, but this letter of praise for Nathaniel's really made our day!

The following is excerpted from a formal thank you card sent by a recent guest:

I wanted to take a moment and let you know how wonderful your restaurant Nathaniel's is. I had the pleasure of dining there a few weeks ago and was extremely impressed by the service, food and atmosphere! For years I have passed by and thought of the restaurant as being high priced, mediocre and stuffy. I was delighted to find out I was incorrect and just how much it had changed from years ago.

What Fun!

Halloween in January? Not exactly, but great fun nonetheless! These guests stayed with us for our Halloween Ball package. His costume, made by his wife, was outstanding and while the judges did not select it as one of the winners, he was definitely in the running, and was chosen by me for a "Manager's Choice" award.

On Sunday night (Halloween) we had a local specialty photographer here from a company called Frankenstein's Art. They take photos and then put them into scenes from other photos, to create a great background for "your" picture.

This guest used their special photo to create their holiday card, which they sent to us this year. We just had to share!

Winter Wonderland Buffet Set-Up

I love it when a member of our Hawthorne Hotel TEAM comes to me to "show off" some of their work. That was the case today, when Bobby Celentano came and asked me to look at the buffet set-up he had done for the regular Tuesday Rotary Meeting.

I decided his work was definitely worth a blog post, so here it is. I hope you enjoy looking at Bobby's handiwork as well. I say "Job well done, Bobby!, and Thanks so much!!"

I can assure you that there are very few Rotary lunches in this country that get this kind of special treatment.  I am so thankful to have the great team that we have here, who really take pride in doing an outstanding job.

Thanks too, to the culinary team, that provides us with such tasty lunches, week after week!

Robyn Sheather Named December Employee of the Month

Today we recognized Robyn, who works in our Sales Department, for all of the great work she has done over the past year. Robyn has been with us for several years, and during that time she has continually grown in her knowledge of her work, and that is reflected in the high quality of her efforts on behalf of the guests and members of the Hawthorne Hotel Team.
Here you can see the surprise with which Robyn greeted us as we descended upon her desk!

One of the particular accolades that Robyn received in her nomination for this award was some work that she did that was completely outside her normal scope of work -- on Halloween for our Costume Ball, Robyn worked one of the doors.  This is stressful, cold work, and Robyn rose to the occasion with the utmost of grace, control and hospitality.  It is a rare individual that can handle that kind of situation as well as Robyn did for us.  Congratulations!

Food Photos to Whet Your Appetite

Here are the photos for the January "Locals' Specials" in the Tavern. We tried them all last night, and I can assure you that they are all very delicious.
Chicken Cacciatore with Penne Pasta, fresh basil makes it extra delicious!
Lamb Stew was so richly delicious with the most intensely-flavor pan sauce ever!
Pecan -crusted Tilapia was so fresh, light and nicely cooked!

I hope to see you here for these excellent specials during January.  Only $14.50 for a three-course dinner -- you cannot beat that price, especially for food that is of such high quality!
