The Ladies with the Lamps

Last week we received our long-awaited shipment of 300 new lamps for our guest rooms.  We are replacing every lamp in every room in the hotel with new style lamps, made to be much more user-friendly. 

Here are some photos, both silly and serious, of our work.

 Karen and Lindsay were great at assembling the lamps with their bases.

 Claire always make sure we have fun at whatever we do.

 Christine had the task of cutting off all of the plastic wrappings on about 200 lamp shades!  She was a good sport!!

 New floor lamps bring light right over your shoulder for good reading on the sofa.

 These are our favorite new lamps.  They have two outlets built into the base, so if you need to charge a cellphone, or iPod, or computer, the power is at your fingertips!

The pineapple is the universal symbol of hospitality. 

While not pictured here, some of the lamps are now wall-mounted to give light closer to where it is needed, without taking up precious space, especially in our smaller rooms.

I hope you enjoy this additional enhancement to our gracious guest rooms.  And stay tuned -- there are more improvements yet to come this winter.  I mean LOTS more!

Having Fun and a Lovely Cake

Recently we were the host site for a lovely christening party.  The cake, provided by the guests, was just too irresistible for our staff, and they hammed it up a bit before anyone arrived.

I love that our team can have fun while still providing the very best in service to our guests.  I hope you enjoy seeing this playful side of life, in a few 'behind the scenes' photos, too. 

Our client was very happy to let us post these photos, which also makes us very happy.  We know that means they also enjoyed themselves!

Salem and the Hawthorne Welcome NEACTC

The Hawthorne was proud to host the The New England Association of City and Town Clerks' Annual Conference last week.

The NEACTC program included the following description of what attendees could expect: "The Conference Committee has conjured the most bewitching potion of spellbinding educational courses, magical food, charming tours, and captivating camaraderie."

Here are scenes from a few of the activities enjoyed by conference participants.

The Hawthorne's Thomas MacDonald, Assistant Director of Sales, with Marlene Chused, Town Clerk of Sharon, MA, enjoying the welcome reception at the East India Marine Hall at the Peabody Essex Museum.

Entertainment at the reception was provided by The Jolly Rogues.

Mayor Kim Driscoll welcomed attendees to Salem during Thursday's luncheon in the Ballroom.

We enjoyed having the NEACTC conference at the Hawthorne and hope attendees enjoyed all that Salem has to offer.

2011 Rotary Scholarship Salem History Calendars on Sale Now

Every year our local Salem Rotary Club produces a unique calendar, made up of photos of historic Salem, usually with a theme. This year's theme is "Downtown Salem, Retail and More. . "

If you, or someone you know, grew up in Salem, or if you love Salem history, this may be exactly what you want. In addition to being a lovely calendar, this item also is a raffle ticket. And not just any raffle ticket -- this is a ticket where you could possibly win 52 different times. Each week we draw one lucky recipient of $100 from the pot of tickets entered. Each week all of the tickets go back in the pot (including the winner) to be drawn for again the following week.

This calendar makes a great gift, and if you think of it as a three-way gift, you will realize that you simply need to buy some. Hawthorne Team Member Goes Above and Beyond

It is always a pleasure to receive a handwritten note of thanks from a satisfied guest. It is not every day that we receive a note from a visitor who didn't actually get to stay with us!

The week prior to Halloween was a busy one in Salem, especially at the Hawthorne. An out of town visitor arrived at the hotel without a reservation and found we were sold out. Rather than turn her away, Elisabeth, our front desk clerk, assisted until overnight accommodations were found at another hotel.

We thought you'd like to see the handwritten card of thanks.

Milk and Honey

One of my favorite things to do when I visit a new country is to check out the grocery stores.  While we don't have any large grocery stores in downtown Salem, we are very fortunate to have a new store called Milk and Honey, which is located only a few short blocks from the Hawthorne Hotel, right next door to a lovely wine shop called Salem Wine Imports.

Milk and Honey bills itself as a "Green Grocer" but it is much more than that to me.  They have an outstanding selection of imported and local artisan's cheeses and other dairy products, carry some locally raised meats and poultry, sell grains, nuts, beans, and legumes in whatever quantity one needs, and sell dried herbs and spices by the ounce.

They also carry some locally baked cookies, bars and other pastries, and bread, crackers and the like.  There really is something for everyone.

This is a great way to take home a bit of the North Shore's produce, or to gather together the fixings for an impromptu picnic to eat on the plane or train on the way home.  Much, much better than the stuff one will find at the airport, or even worse, what you might be offered on the airplane or train.

If you enjoy being able to know more about where your food comes from, if you like supporting local agriculture, and if you just enjoy a less-hurried way of life, Milk and Honey is a place you should not miss.

Celebrity Cells was the theme within a theme at our annual Halloween Ball.  This year it was all about the jail scene -- Bedlam Behind Bars.

The Windblown Guy was a very clever costume.  There was more to it than meets the eye, to achieve this look in the stillness of a hotel function room.

The Heart of a Hotel Room

We believe that the very most important item in a hotel room is the bed. That is why we always buy the best that we can find, which means beds made right here in Salem by Gardner Mattress Company. Gardner uses only top quality parts, and since they are made in America, the quality of the construction is also superb.

Our old beds were Gardner, and we always had compliments on them, even this year after at least 12 years of use.  But we felt like the time had come to replace them -- they had served us well.


Here you see the new beds coming in to the hotel.  Since we are an older hotel, the building was built without service elevators, so our guests can really see everything that is going on that involves transport in the elevators.  We think this kind of transparency is not a bad thing.

In addition to new mattresses and box springs, we also purchased mattress encasements.  These encasements are designed to keep out even microscopic organisms such as dust mites, and therefore you can be sure that you will be the only living thing in your bed.  In this day and age, we also think this will be a very good "peace-of-mind" detail that our customers will be able to appreciate, even if they don't necessarily notice it.  The encasements eliminate the ability of anything to hide, or to get into a mattress, ensuring a much more hygienic sleeping experience.

Last but not least, we bought all new bases for our beds.  These are a different style, which we believe provide several improvements to the quality of your stay with us.  The first is that they go all the way to the floor, so if you accidentally drop something on the floor, it will not be able to roll out of your reach under the bed.  Another thing is something they do not do -- they don't catch your toes on the corner posts, because they are recessed back some inches from the edges of the beds -- so no more stubbed toes!  And they have more cross supports, so the comfort of the sleeping experience will be enhanced overall.

One caveat -- we do still have about six four-poster beds in the hotel, which will remain.  They are just part of the ambiance.  So if you get one of those rooms, please don't take me to task on the bed base issue.  If you really don't want a four-poster bed, just make your request known when you reserve.  We are always happy to honor special requests as much as we are able.

Subject: Nobody throws a Halloween party like the Hawthorne

Hi Lucie,

Well things have finally calmed down and gotten back to normal ...a little.

I just wanted to complement you on the Halloween Ball. The band was great, they played a variety
of music to please everyone (even rock for me). The food was hot, fresh, and delicious, we are vegetarians and there was a large selection. Also, your friendly staff was happy to point the veggie items out to us. The decorations were elaborate in every room, I especially like the second floor where the walls looked like stone. I cant believe you do so much work in one day, then by Sunday morning it "magically" disappears.

So much thought and creativity goes into this event, from the time we received our "summons" in the mail, the themed goodie bags, coordinating the ball itself, and extending an extra party on Sunday for the comfort of your guests. I hope you all got a well deserved rest after the festivities.

Our personal Hawthorne highlights were:

• never knowing who or what is going to get out of the elevator.
• seeing a giant "Chuckie" doll run down the hall after his adorable little dog snuck out between his legs.
• standing in the lobby to make sure we don't miss any costumes.
• meeting so many people that love Halloween like we do (many from our area too).
• getting a chance to see John Marsicano's room in person- WOW!
• hearing our neighbors hysterically laughing while they were getting in costume, it just made us laugh too!
• the many "do not disturb" signs on the doors Sunday morning, proof that everyone enjoyed themselves.
• the honorable mention awarded to my husband the Mad Hatter signed by Juli (which now hangs in my sewing room as motivation for 2011). That was a very kind gesture and much appreciated.

We can't wait until next year !!!

New Dessert Menus -- Yummiest Yet!

"Life is too uncertain, eat dessert first" is one of my favorite sayings. At the Hawthorne Hotel you may eat dessert whenever you wish.

One thing about timing that you might want to know is that if you order your dinner in Nathaniel's before 5:30 pm, we will give you a complimentary salad and dessert when you order a full-size dinner entree. That is a terrific deal for those of you who like to dine early.

Trip type: Solo travel

When I walked into the lobby, I knew the hotel was going to far exceed what I was hoping for - a lovely hotel that exuded New England charm. My room was absolutely lovely. It, too, gave a period feel but yet was totally fresh with lots of windows and comfy bedding. It was more than ample in size and had plenty of storage space. The bathroom, as well as the sleeping area, was clean and had all the modern conveniences without sacrificing the historic flavorof the place.. There was also fample free parking.
The restaurant on premises, served good food and was a big convenience.

The location of the hotel was fabulous. We (the college girlfriends, with whom I was having a mini reunion, and I) were able to walk to several museums, to restaurants and to a sailing ship upon which we spent a glorious sunny afternoon ocean sailing and learning about priviteering.

The staff was extraordinary. They were friendly and helped direct us to the best beaches and supply us with information as to what was going on in the area. This helpfulness began long distance with them making suggestions as to how to get to the hotel from Logan most efficiently and economically.

I really can find nothing to say that isn't laudatory. The Hawthorne Hotel, itself, was a highlght of my trip. It would be one of the reasons I'd like to return to Salem. Friendly,beautiful, well maintained and well run.I'd go back in a heart beat.

Weddings Are Important at the Hawthorne Hotel

Tonight we have two weddings going on in the Hotel, a very large one in the Grand Ballroom, and a smaller wedding in Sophia's and Nathaniel's. In addition, we are running a wedding at the Peabody Essex Museum.  While we have a separate wedding blog, we thought that you, our "regular" blog readers, might be interested in knowing about this important part of the life of the Hawthorne Hotel.

Social Media and the Hawthorne Hotel

Some interesting information about the Hawthorne Hotel's use of Social Media that you may not already know.

We have been blogging for over 5-1/2 years, every single day.  There are probably very few hotels anywhere that have that kind of dedication to blogging.  I like to think of our blog posts as a kind of daily news magazine of life at the Hawthorne Hotel, and Salem, Massachusetts, and Essex County.  I am able to include articles with lots of photos on our blog.

We also maintain a FaceBook page, with nearly 1,500 friends.  We link our blog posts to our FaceBook page, so all the blog posts show up in the notes section.  Therefore if you are a 'fan' of the Hawthorne Hotel, you can easily check out our blog posts as well.  I sometimes tell people that I think of our FaceBook posts as short newspaper-type updates.

Lastly, we maintain a presence on Twitter.  Our tweets also link to our blog posts, and are interspersed with other noteworthy 'bits and bats.'  I liken our presence on Twitter to radio information.  Short and to the point.

I really love connecting with our guests in these different ways  -- it is something that helps us all enjoy the part of our business known as hospitality, of providing a personal connection to people by a business entity.

Sometimes I am able to catch Tweets that mention something about coming to Salem, and to the Hotel, and then I am able to make a guest's visit extra special just because they follow us on Twitter.  I hope you follow us, and let us know about your visits, so I can treat you sometime!

Movies, movies, movies!!!

With crummy weather upon us, what better time to go indoors to a great local theater, enjoy excellent popcorn with REAL BUTTER on it, or a nice cup of tea or a Fresca, and watch the best in entertainment on the silver screen, all at prices that are far better than the mega-mall theaters?

Here is the line-up for Cinema Salem, located just one short block from the Hawthorne Hotel, which makes it the perfect location for a pre- or post-theater meal or adult beverage:

There were big crowds last weekend at CinemaSalem for Megamind 3D. If you're hoping to save a few bucks (and who isn't these days), consider coming to the 11:45 am show on Saturday or Sunday, when the 3D admission price is only $8! The same show at Liberty Tree Mall will cost $11.50 if you're a child, and $12.50 if you're an adult.

Responding to numerous requests, we've added an earlier set of shows for tomorrow's Veteran's Day school holiday. There'll be a Megamind screening at 2:00, 4:30, and 6:45; a Due Date showing at 2:45, 5:15, and 7:30; Mademoiselle Chambon at 2:15, 4:45, and 7:00, and Paranormal Activity at 2:30, 5:00, and 7:15.

Tomorrow night, Thursday, November 11, we'll be screening Fringe for free. Doors open at 8:30!

Next Thursday, November 18, at 8:15, we'll be presenting another brand new film by a local filmmaker, although this movie was the result of an international collaboration across cultures. Retaliate with Love is a Christian-themed film which tells the heartrending story of a Southeast Asian family's response to the brutal murder of the father. Filmmaker Steve Baldwin, who edited the film in collaboration with other filmmakers from several countries, will be on hand for a discussion after the screening. Best of all, thanks to a generous underwriter, the screening is free! The same show at Liberty Tree Mall would cost you at least $10.50, and let's face it, they aren't showing any local filmmakers these days.

Later that same evening, next Thursday, the Midnight Premiere of Harry Potter 7A hits Salem! Buy your tickets now!

And don't forget that parking is now free at CinemaSalem for two hours! Just park in the Museum Place garage, bring us your blue parking ticket, and we'll affix two validation stickers. Never pay for parking again!

Now let's take a peek at this week's films.

Now Playing: Waiting for Superman (NR); Due Date (R); Megamind 3D (PG); and Paranormal Activity 2 (R)!

Opening for just one week at CinemaSalem is the year's most talked-about documentary, Waiting for Superman, the clear-eye critique of American's educational system and the impact of its failures on individual children. It's not hard to find insane raves when a film sports a 90% positive rating on RottenTomatoes.com. Boston Globe: "It's meant to infuriate you and break your heart enough that you feel compelled to do something. There's a great deal of agit(ation) with very little prop(aganda)." Roger Ebert: "The film demonstrates (1) that quality education is possible for even the most disadvantaged students; (2) the cost is low, considering that high school dropouts often turn to crime when they can't find good jobs." New York Times: "A powerful and alarming documentary about America's failing public school system."

This film has proven extraordinarily popular with educators, who are moved to see their challenges presented so compellingly on the big screen. In honor of their efforts, we're happy to provide a $2 discount for any K-12 educators who show us their school ID or MTA card.

Waiting for Superman will screen on Friday at (4:45), 7:00 and 9:40; Saturday at (12:00), (2:15), (4:45), 7:00 and 9:40; Sunday at (12:00), (2:15), (4:45) and 7:00; and Monday-Thursday at (4:45) and 7:00. Principals, don't worry about bringing your whole faculty to a screening; this film will be in one of our large theaters this week, not in the Screening Room.

We have another awesome movie in the Screening Room, however. I'm Still Here is the controversial faux tragic-comic pseudo-doc about Joquin Phoenix's bizarre withdrawal from the life of a movie star. New York Times: "Whatever (the filmmakers') actual intentions, I'm Still Here does take on, at times forcefully and effectively, the pathological fallout of the Entertainment Industrial Complex." Rolling Stone: "I'm not sure I believed a word of this film. Actors who melt down on camera are usually, well, acting. But I couldn't take my eyes off I'm Still Here."

I'm Still Here will screen Friday at (5:00), 7:15 and 9:30; Saturday at (12:15), (2:30), (5:00), 7:15 and 9:30; Sunday at (12:15), (5:00) and 7:15; and Monday-Thursday at (5:00) and 7:15.

The aforementioned Megamind 3D is back for more villainous fun at CinemaSalem. Who loves it? National Public Radio: "The kiddie set can chortle at Megamind's slapstick and its goofy one-upmanship while adults get a kick out of all the smart spatial tricks that highlight the 3-D effects." Aisle Seat: "Megamind is fast and funny, with excellent use of 3D." Washington Post: ""Megamind" is a smart, funny and original treat. Sweet enough to deliver a message about creating your own destiny, but with just enough sour grapes not to cloy, the movie delivers pure pleasure from start to finish."

Megamind will screen starting Friday at (4:30), 6:45 and 9:00; Saturday at (11:45 AM), (2:00), (4:30), 6:45 and 9:00; Sunday at (11:45 AM), (2:00), (4:30) and 6:45; and Monday-Thursday at (4:30) and 6:45.

Due Date drew droves to CinemaSalem last weekend, based on its own set of rave reviews from the nation's nattering nabobs of film positivity. Washington Post: "With Due Date, director Todd Phillips perfects the particular brand of comic alchemy that made his 2009 comedy The Hangover such an unexpectedly huge hit." Philadelphia Inquirer: "There is something comically symmetrical about Downey as an expectant dad rehearsing fatherhood with the overgrown boy and Galifianakis as the fatherless son who adopts Downey as his surrogate dad."

Restaurant Week in Nathaniel's and Tavern Specials for November

So much good dining, so little time. 

That is what most of us in Salem are thinking this month, as we kicked off our "welcome back Salem" to Salem Restaurant Week yesterday.  The Hawthorne Hotel has two Restaurant Week Specials since we have two restaurants. 

Nathaniel's Restaurant Week Special:  Three-Course Dinner for $25.  While some restaurants pick some inexpensive things to offer for specials this week, or offer things you will never have again, we want you to try our regular dinner menu in Nathaniel's, so this is how our Restaurant Week special works in Nathaniel's, today through Thursday this week only:

You order and pay one set price of only $25:

• Your choice from any of our Appetizers on our Regular Dinner Menu
• Your choice of any Demi-Portion Entree from our Regular Dinner Menu
• Your choice of any of our desserts from our new Dessert Menu

In our Tavern Restaurant, our Restaurant Week Special is only $14.50 for three courses.  For some restaurants they are offering a Restaurant Week Special of a two-course menu for $15, but at the Tavern you get THREE COURSES for only $14.50!! 

Every month we offer this kind of a special, normally from Sunday through Wednesday nights.  For Restaurant Week, you can order them through Thursday night.  Here are this months specials:

Flowers on the Bed

October was such a busy month, we did not have time to post all the stories that had occurred, so we are going to be catching up now.

During the month a gentleman called the front desk prior to his arrival. He said he wanted to surprise his sweetie by having flowers on the bed, along with a very love note, when they arrived. The desk clerk who took the call was left to decide which flowers and how to arrange them.

This photo shows her handiwork, which is very lovely. We thought you might like to see it yourself.

The Faces of Halloween at "Bedlam Behind Bars", Hawthorne Hotel 2010

These were some of our favorite spooky, scary, creepy faces at our annual Costume Ball here at the Hawthorne Hotel this Halloween.  Some of them are guests, and some are wanna-be guests who crashed last year's Ball.  (Just kidding!)  I hope you enjoy seeing them.
