From Beginner to "Expert" in Four-plus Years

Someone once gave an offbeat definition of an expert. Here it is "An X is a has-been, and a spurt is a drip under pressure." So that makes a pretty unflattering description, which is why I put the word in quotes.

Several months ago I was asked to present as an 'expert' on blogging as part of a panel at a local tourism conference. I was persuaded, and here is the photo to show you that it happened.

I am not sure I am much of an expert, although I do blog every day, and we think that it has been successful for us here at the Hawthorne Hotel when compared to the standard which we set for ourselves over four years ago -- that is for this to become the daily diary of the Hawthorne Hotel.

Here I am, with Judi Window and Kate Fox, just before the panel that we presented at the North of Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau annual conference yesterday.

I spoke about blogging, Judi about Twitter, and Kate about FaceBook. Judi runs a huge group of volunteers who TWEET back responses to visitors and potential visitors to New Hampshire. If you are going there, and want to visit a "virtual" visitor's center, tweet @AskNH -- you should get back a nearly immediate response to your question.

Kate runs Destination Salem, our local visitor organization. She blogs (she says she does it because I told her to!) and she tweets as well as posting on

I hope you enjoy learning more about what is going on in my life as the GM of the historic Hawthorne Hotel. We might be historic, but we are far from moldy-oldie!
