Mystery of the Day at the Hawthorne Hotel, Salem, MA

When I go to work each day, I never can begin to imagine what might wind up coming to my attention. This morning started out like many others, looking at reports, scanning the Salem News for relevant information for the Hotel, reading email and following up on issues with different members of my staff.

A little before 9 our Dining Services Manager, Penny Petronzio, walked in to my office with today's mystery item -- an envelope that had been nearly shredded to pieces by post office processing machinery. The envelope had no return address, not even a postmark so that we would know where it came from, and held inside, wrapped in an also nearly shredded sheet of plain white paper, two keys to room 404.

So, why the mystery? Well, we have not used keys like those in at least 12 years, maybe longer. So we are trying to figure out why someone would have kept them all that time, and just now have decided to return them. Some members of our staff were having fun thinking up all kinds of scenarios, but I have a feeling that this will always remain a mystery.

I thought you, fair blog-reader, might enjoy this "behind-the-scenes" look at what might happen in any given day here at the Historic Hawthorne Hotel in Salem, Massachusetts.

I hope to see you here, mysterious or not!
