No, it is not a curse word, although it sounds like it could be. A bollard is defined as:
bol·lard n. Nautical. A thick post on a ship or wharf, used for securing ropes and hawsers. [Middle English, probably from bole, tree trunk.]
Ours are the green posts that you see at the sidewalk. They were intalled to do two things -- the first, and most important, was to keep large vehicles such as busses and trucks from driving up on the sidewalk and destroying our canopies. The second reason is that they more fully define the entrances to the hotel.
