Second Place, Hawthorne Hotel's Annual Costume Ball

Here in Salem, Massachusetts, getting into costume is virtually an expectation. This group went 'above and beyond' in the creative category, coming as bags of "Organic Dirty Hands Farms" Spinach, and a bunch of E-Coli, along with the FDA fairy.

Every year we get to witness creativity first hand, at our annual costume ball.

This group won second place, but I voted for them for first! I guess it shows that this is not a dictatorship, at least not on Halloween.

To the reader who requested help viewing the Halloween photo album:

If the page comes up black and stays that way, it may be that you don't have a fast enough connection to view this site, or you may have some kind of feature that blocks you from seeing it. Sorry, but I'm not a techie at all. However, when I have tested it both from Internet Explorer and AOL I have been able to view it -- although both locations do have DSL lines.

This headless ghoul won an honorable mention from the managers of the Hawthorne Hotel. He took his award in his teeth when we invited him up on stage. Creepy!

First Place Individual Winner in Costume Contest

Halloween at the Hawthorne Hotel is a costume fantasy world. This fellow, self-labeled Dr. Death, won first place in our individual category for last evening's ball.

 

And yes, he was on stilts, and he did an awesome job navigating around the hotel on them all night long.

We hope you will come to our ball next year to enjoy all of the merriment first hand.

A Local Artist with an Unusual Look at the World

Here at the Hawthorne Hotel we are so fortunate to have an art gallery. It is the Kensington-Stobart Gallery, and this month they are featuring the work of local Salem artist, Charles J. Lang.

This piece shown in my photo above is called Stonehinge. It is a hoot. I hope you enjoy seeing this and the other pieces I have featured on our Hawthorne Hotel Blog.

Tinkerbell and Friends Visit the Hawthorne Hotel for Our Annual Costume Brunch

These guests, Rob, Mackenzie and Mary Ann, drove all the way from Connecticut to visit us and enjoy our annual costume brunch. We were so taken with Tinkerbell's costume that we had to ask if we could share some shots with you.

The Hawthorne Hotel Has a Fun Side. . .

 
While we might be an historic hotel, and we certainly work hard to make sure that our service is top-notch, I don't think that should mean we are stodgy or stuffy. We really do enjoy having fun here, and sometimes the best fun we can have is during this crazy month of October, when seeing people wandering around in the lobby in costume is considered quite normal.

This painting pokes fun at an everyday item, thumbtacks, and in fact, is entitled, Thumbtacks, by Charles J. Lang. It is part of the special exhibition at the Kensington-Stobart Gallery, located right here in the Hawthorne Hotel.

Shaking Things Up at the Costume Brunch

We couldn't resist snapping these photos of some of the attendees of the annual Hawthorne Hotel Costume Brunch today. They were 'cutting a rug' with their dancing on Sunday morning, and it all seemed so happy and carefree, we tried to capture it on our digital camera.

Hawthorne Hotel's Flags of the Week, October 23 through 29, 2006

This week we have two "out of rotation" flags flying. On Tuesday we are flying the flag of the United Nations in honor of United Nations Day, and on Sunday we are flying the flag of Texas, because of a special request from a guest staying in the hotel.

Beverly Hospital's Southern Belles Visit Salem

One of the fun things about working in a hotel is that you never know who is going to walk in the door next. That is doubly true in Salem, Massachusetts in October, because we have become the Halloween Capital of the World, and people think coming here in costume is a hoot -- and it is!

Nearly all of these women are endoscopy nurses at Beverly Hospital, with one operating room nurse for some variety. We speculate that when you do that kind of work for a living, you probably deserve a fantasy day in Salem every once in awhile.

Nurse Christine Curtis made all of the fabulous dresses.

They came to the Hawthorne Hotel and went out around Salem for shopping, a good time, drinks, men, and to celebrate the birthday of Nurse Savannah Gauthier.

If you plan to come to Salem in costume this year, be sure to come to show off for us, and you may wind up on our blog as well.
