Suzannah Flint House

In addition to the 89 rooms at the Hawthorne Hotel, we own and operate a charming bed and breakfast, located on the far side of our parking lot. It is currently called the Suzannah Flint House, although we have plans to rename it for an interesting person who grew up there.

Here you see the house sporting its spring planting of pansies, and you can also see the lilac tree that is just beginning to bloom.

Our Hawthorne Hotel 'campus'

In addition to the Hawthorne Hotel building, built in 1925, we own the Suzannah Flint House, built in 1807, and located just on the other side of our parking lot.

In this photo you can see not only the beautiful spring-blooming trees there, but in the background you get a peek at our Hawthorne Catering truck.

We operate Hawthorne Catering, which is the preferred caterer at the PEM (Peabody Essex Museum), and we also cater all over the North Shore.

If you are interesting in talking directly to our Catering Sales Manager, Amy Jacobson, about utilizing Hawthorne Catering, you can reach her at 978-745-9500 extension 3156.

We look forward to seeing you, whether at the Hawthorne Hotel, at PEM, or at a location that you choose.

Hawthorne Hotel Pansies have a renegade in their midst

Every year we plant the same beautiful, soft yellow-cream colored pansies as the first planting of the year in our window boxes. This color pansy is grown especially for us, and we receive many compliments.

This year there were a few purple pansies that infiltrated the yellow ones, and I love the surprise that they make, looking very jaunty and proud of their place in our boxes.

I thought you would enjoy seeing them, too!

Can a Hotel have an Official Baseball Team?

Why not! Here are a few of our staff pictured with the World Series Trophy won by the Boston Red Sox in 2004 - the year the curse was reversed.

They are shown posing with it, in our Library function room last week. It was brought to the hotel through the efforts of one of our corporate clients, and they were kind enough to take these photos and send them to us.

This is just another example of a day in the life of the Hawthorne Hotel. We always have fun at what we do, which makes our work here all that much more enjoyable.

Hawthorne Hotel's Ballroom has new carpet

Here is a photo showing our new Ballroom carpet which was installed last week. The pattern was custom made for the Hawthorne Hotel, incorporating many of the historic elements seen in the Ballroom and the Lobby.

In this photo you can see how nicely it ties in with the chandelier medallions and the dentil molding.

I hope you will stop by to see it the next time you are in the area, and I hope to see you then!

Do you like a good ghost story? Check out this one about Nathaniel Hawthorne

This link will take you to a very interesting ghost story about Nathaniel Hawthorne and the House of the Seven Gables. There are even photos.

Whether or not the story is true, it is an interesting story to read, and you will certainly come away with more information about Nathaniel Hawthorne and his life, than if you don't read it.

In any case, I hope to see you here, at the Hawthorne Hotel.

Our Guests Say the Nicest Things about the Hawthorne Hotel

One of the best things about my job here at the Hawthorne Hotel in Salem, Massachusetts, is the fact that I get to hear how delighted our guests are with the staff and service at our hotel. Just this week I received this unsolicited email. The service staff she praises are Wendy Walsh, Sandy Sinagra and Donna Love.

With permission, it is reprinted here for you to read:

Hi Juli.

My family were guests at the Passover Seder held at your hotel on Saturday, April 15, 2006 at 5PM sponsored by Barbara and Maynard Axelrod.

The meal was wonderful, but I must tell you how exceptional the women that helped in that room. I am sorry I do not have their names; however, I am sure you can find out that information. Many times they asked if they could get anything else for us that was not already being served. They were so pleasant and really went out of their way to be as helpful as possible.

I wanted you to know that anytime you need a recommendation, I certainly would be glad to give one.

Once again, please give a special thank you for the hostess and servers who were assigned to that private room.

Rosa Nina-Brito named Part-time Employee of the Month for March 2006

In November of 2005, Hawthorne Hotel Catering took over the food service contract at the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM). Several of the existing staff members who had been working in the food service areas there interviewed for positions with our company, and were hired. One of those staffers, Rosa Nina-Brito, was just named as our part-time employee of the month for March of 2006.

You see her pictured here with James Kluge, who is our Dining Services Manager for the entire front of the house food service operation, including both the Hawthorne Hotel and PEM.

We are so pleased that Rosa joined our team, as she has proved to be a delightful addition to the organization. Not only does she work for us at PEM, but she has come down the street to work for us at the Hawthorne Hotel as well.

Rosa, congratulations, and thank you for all you do!

Rosa seemed delighted as the management team of the Hawthorne Hotel walked into her workspace at the PEM and surprised with her award as part-time employee of the month. Posted by Picasa

Hawthorne Hotel's Full-Time Employee of the Month for March 2006 ~ Mark Hardin

Mark is shown here receiving his award, along with Amanda Middleton and Marianne Stewart, Dining Services Supervisor and Assistant Manager.

Mark wears many hats for us, functioning as a Nathaniel's Dining Room Server, a Tavern Server, a Banquet Server, and even as a Host. Whatever needs to be done, Mark stands willing to pitch in and help.

Thanks so much, and Congratulations from us all.

The Hawthorne Hotel learns about Letterboxing

On Monday as I was visiting guests having lunch in our Tavern, I met Christie and Anne Valibura. They were here with their father, visiting us from Reading, Massachusetts.

When I inquired about what brought them to the Hawthorne I learned that they were in Salem "letterboxing". That inquiry led to the next, which in turn provided me with some insight into this interesting and unique hobby.

The sisters are shown here displaying one of the stamps they acquired in their book this very day.

I learned that there are multiple locations here in Salem, and was directed to the website to get the clues if I wanted to find them for myself. I do know that one of them is on Winter Island. The website is

So, if you are a 'letterbox' scavenger of any ilk, perhaps you should consider a visit to Salem, with a stopover at the Hawthorne Hotel.

We would love to see you here.

Letterboxing and Hawthorne

Here is one of the stamps that Christie and Anne collected here in Salem. As you can see it is a stamp representing the Hawthorne Hotel's namesake, Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Nina Vickers and her harp, at the Hawthorne Hotel

For every holiday we celebrate with a special brunch buffet, Nina Vickers and her harp are as integral as the buffet itself.

Here she is on Easter Sunday, in her stunning new outfit. Nina sews all her own clothes, and she always is dressed to the 'nines'.

The Hawthorne Hotel is a Family-Friendly Place

Here is Claire Kallelis with her husband and little boy, mixing it up with the Easter Bunny. Claire is our Director of Food and Beverage, and that means holidays equal work days, just as they do for most all of us.

It is nice that she was able to spend a few minutes of quality time with her family in the midst of her work on Easter.

Thanks Claire, and thanks to all our staff members who get to work while others play!

A special Easter Guest

This charming youngster showed off her darling Easter dress for me. Isn't she a doll?

The holidays at the Hawthorne Hotel are such a special time -- we love to see all the children in the special dress-up clothes, and watching them grow up is a great feeling for all of us.

Our staff members' children enjoy a pre-Easter egg decorating party

As part of our annual traditions here at the Hawthorne Hotel, every year on the Friday before Easter we have a get-together for the children of our staff members. They get to decorate eggs and eat goodies, and catch up with each other.

As part of our 'family of the Hawthorne Hotel' we do several of these family-friendly events for our staff during the year, including this one.

Aren't these children cute?

The Easter Bunny Greets Tiny Guest of the Hawthorne Hotel

We never know when the Easter Bunny comes out to play with the little ones attending brunch at the Hawthorne Hotel whether or not Bunny will be greeted with grins or grimaces from the very little ones. Fortunately, this little girl was happy to see our resident Easter Bunny.

Two of our very special customers

Every Sunday, and other days too, Marion Russell and Norma Clark come in for breakfast.

Here they are in their Easter finery, enjoying a leisurely breakfast before the brunch crowd arrives.

We love seeing our 'regulars' as they are like part of us.

Easter Sunday and our regular guests. . .

Rob Park is one of our most regular guests. He knows to come early on days like Easter Sunday, to beat the rush.

We enjoy our regular customers so much because they seem like part of the Hawthorne Hotel family.

Happy holidays to you all.

A tradition begun

In 2003 this couple got married and had their reception at the Hawthorne Hotel. As you can see by this photo, they really do enjoy unusual cakes.

The tradition was continued at their baby shower in the hotel last weekend.

I hope you will consider starting or continuing a tradition at the Hawthorne Hotel.

Some days we just like to have fun. . .

Since the following quote from Groucho Marx is food-related, and since we serve food at the Hawthorne Hotel, I thought you might enjoy a smile today.

"Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana."

I look forward to seeing your smiling face here at the Hawthorne Hotel.

Hawthorne Hotel tells the rest of the story

Last weekend we had a convergence of baby showers at the Hawthorne Hotel. That alone is not unusual, but what was unusual this weekend was that both of the moms-and dads-to-be had gotten married at the Hawthorne Hotel. Sarah and her husband were married in 2004, and as you can see they are expecting a baby girl soon.

Congratulations to you all!

Hawthorne Hotel is part of the family

On May 31, 2003, Coleen and Shawn Mahoney got married at the Hawthorne Hotel, and Jessica Soep was the coordinator for their wedding reception.

On Saturday April 8, Coleen and Shawn's friends had a baby shower for them, and Jessica was once again the coordinator for their event.

It truly feels like family here at the Hawthorne Hotel. Now we can look forward to the next 'occasion of grace' for the Sweeny family.

What about your family? I would love to see all of you here.
