Since I love tea in virtually any way, as well as I appreciate a good cup of coffee, I made it a point to improve the tea service here at the Hawthorne Hotel as soon as I arrived on the scene in 1999.

First to change was the iced tea service. I believe that the only good iced tea is unsweetened brewed iced tea, served in a large glass, with a good-sized wedge of lemon (suitable for squeezing) perched on the rim of the glass (not already floating in the tea, in case one is a non-lemon loving tea drinker). So, that is now our standard here at the Hawthorne Hotel, and our iced tea service encompasses unlimited refills while you are dining.

The next item to change was the kind of tea we offer for our hot tea service. Now I know that for really fussy tea drinkers, the ONLY standard is loose leaves brewed in a pot and served with a tea strainer. However, given the constraints of our food service environment, which encompasses complimentary take-away coffee and tea service all morning, as well as quick service in our Tavern, and banquet service in our private meeting rooms, we felt that we could not offer that kind of tea service.

Therefore, we went to the next best thing, which is a very high quality tea in a teabag. Our tea of choice is from Harney and Sons, and we offer 8 to 10 different varieties of their tea, including English Breakfast, Orange Pekoe, Earl Grey, Apricot, decaffeinated, Raspberry Herbal (really a tisane), Sencha (Japanese Green Tea), Chamomile, and Peppermint Herbal.
