Jose Rivera and the H.L. Hunley Submarine
Here is a closeup of the business end of the replica of the H.L. Hunley that Jose is building for Ken O'Keefe, our banquet chef at the Hawthorne Hotel. Jose builds ships as a hobby, and this is the one that Ken asked for.
Ken spent a lot of in time Charleston, South Carolina, which is the home of the Hunley. Which explains his interest in things from Charleston.
For those of you who don't know, the Hunley was the first ever submarine to sink an enemy ship in battle. The submarine was powered by 8 men plus a captain. The 8 men turned the paddles which created the power to move the ship. This event occurred during the Civil War in 1864, and the submarine was raised from the waters off of Charleston in the 2000.
Here at the Hawthorne Hotel, we've always felt a kind of connection between Salem and Charleston, and now here is another reason why.
